What is a Google Site Reliability Engineer?

Google Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) are specialized engineers responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of Google's infrastructure and services. They bridge the gap between software development and operations by automating tasks, monitoring systems, and responding to incidents. SREs work to minimize downtime, manage large-scale distributed systems, and implement best practices for reliability. Their work involves a combination of software engineering, system administration, and process improvement to support Google's products and users.

How does a Google Site Reliability Engineer typically collaborate with software development teams?

Google Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) work closely with software development teams to ensure that systems are reliable, scalable, and efficient. They participate in design reviews, provide feedback on system architecture with an emphasis on reliability, and help define service level objectives (SLOs) and monitoring standards. SREs often engage in incident response and post-mortem analysis alongside developers, fostering a culture of shared responsibility for uptime and performance. This collaboration helps bridge the gap between development and operations, promoting continuous improvement and rapid innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Google Site Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Google Site Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, software engineering, and systems administration, often backed by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python, Go, or Java), cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and monitoring systems is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a proactive mindset set exceptional SREs apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of large-scale infrastructure and services.

What is the difference between Google Site Reliability Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectGoogle Site Reliability EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires computer science or engineering degree, experience with coding, systems, and cloud platformsOften has similar technical background, certifications like AWS, Azure, or Linux are common
Work EnvironmentFocuses on maintaining large-scale systems, reliability, and automation at GoogleWorks across development and operations teams to streamline deployment and infrastructure
Industry UsagePrimarily used within Google and similar large tech companiesWidely adopted across various industries for infrastructure and deployment automation

Google Site Reliability Engineers and DevOps Engineers share many skills, including scripting, cloud knowledge, and system management. However, SREs focus more on system reliability and scalability within large-scale environments like Google, while DevOps Engineers emphasize continuous integration, deployment, and collaboration across development and operations teams.

Is Google Site Reliability Engineer in demand?

The role of a Site Reliability Engineer at Google is highly in demand due to the increasing reliance on cloud services and large-scale infrastructure. SREs with skills in automation, monitoring, and cloud platforms are sought after across the tech industry, reflecting strong job growth in this field.

About Us

At Energy Worldnet, Inc. (EWN), we deliver innovative technology solutions that empower our clients and support the future of the energy industry. Our SaaS platform helps organizations operate more safely, efficiently, and compliantly.

We are seeking a highly skilled Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to help ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of our platform products, including public APIs, customer integrations, and data delivery services.

This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of software engineering and operations-someone passionate about building resilient systems, improving observability, and ensuring customers can rely on our platform for real-time operational and business decisions.

If you're driven by operational excellence, system reliability, and continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you!

Please note: This is a hybrid role that requires regular onsite collaboration and occasional client visits. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area before their start date. Relocation assistance is not provided.

This position requires regular on-site attendance. Through September 30, 2026, employees are expected to work onsite at EWN's current headquarters in Decatur, Texas as required to support collaboration, coaching, decision-making, and business outcomes. Effective October 1, 2026, EWN's headquarters will relocate to Westlake, Texas. Beginning on that date, employees will be required to work onsite in Westlake on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with remote work available on Mondays and Fridays. Regular onsite participation is considered an essential function of this role.

Please note: We do not support employment visa sponsorship (e.g., H-1B visa).

What You'll Do

As a Site Reliability Engineer at EWN, you will:

Design and operate highly reliable, scalable, observable, and secure platform services, including public APIs, integrations, and data pipelines
Partner with Principal Engineers during system design and implementation to ensure reliability, fault tolerance, performance, security, and operational readiness are built into platform solutions from the start
Define, implement, and monitor service-level indicators (SLIs), service-level objectives (SLOs), and error budgets
Contribute production-quality code to platform services, shared libraries, and tooling to improve reliability, performance, observability, and operational safety
Design and maintain observability solutions, including monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting, and service health dashboards
Proactively identify and mitigate reliability risks through capacity planning, load testing, and resilience testing
Lead incident response efforts, including coordination, communication, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews
Collaborate with DevOps Engineers to support infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines and serve as an operational backup when needed
Participate in on-call rotations and respond to service degradation or outages affecting externally consumed services
Drive continuous improvement in reliability, performance, and operational processes

What You'll Bring

Required Skills & Experience

At least 7 years of professional experience operating, supporting, or engineering production software systems
Demonstrated experience improving reliability, availability, performance, or scalability of production systems
Strong experience diagnosing and resolving complex production issues in distributed or service-oriented systems
Experience writing and maintaining production-quality code for automation, tooling, or services
Solid understanding of Site Reliability Engineering principles (SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, incident management)
Experience with distributed systems, API-driven platforms, and service-oriented architectures
Strong debugging, documentation, and operational problem-solving skills
Ability to operate effectively during incidents and high-pressure situations
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly

Preferred Skills & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Experience supporting externally consumed services such as public APIs, integrations, or data delivery systems
Experience designing or implementing observability solutions (monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting)
Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, or similar)
Experience with containerized or cloud-native architectures
Experience improving CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, or operational automation
Experience working within a SaaS or data-driven platform environment
