POSITION: Middle School Science and Social Studies Instructional Coach
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month position (Temporary if hired after contractual start date for teachers)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Lead implementation and alignment of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Delaware Social Studies Standards in grades 6-12.
  • Coordinate with district coach science kits via implementation; maintain curriculum materials across platforms (e.g., Schoology/Google).
  • Support curriculum pilots, pacing guides, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), and OpenSciEd programming.
  • Guide the development and revision of 3-dimensional science assessments, rubrics, and aligned instructional units.
  • Support state-required social studies curriculum mandates including HB 198, HR 31, civics requirements, and other (s).
  • Collaborate with the district assessment team to support benchmark, interim, and state testing (e.g., DeSSA, SAT, DCPS).
  • Provide guidance on integrating literacy and disciplinary reading/writing strategies across science and social studies.

II. Instructional Coaching and Professional Learning
  • Deliver coaching cycles, lesson modeling, and feedback to teachers and teams using walkthroughs, lesson study, and data protocols.
  • Facilitate school-based and district-level professional learning communities (PLCs) using Learning Forward standards.
  • Design and lead high-quality professional development (in-person, virtual, small group) aligned to strategic district initiatives.
  • Serve as a strategic partner in MTSS design, intervention planning, and universal design for learning in content areas and learners.

III. Data-Driven Decision-Making and Equity Support
  • Analyze and communicate student data (formative, benchmark, and summative) to identify trends and drive instructional improvement.
  • Collaborate with school teams to support instructional equity for multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and gifted learners.
  • Coordinate inclusive instructional support across content areas and ensure alignment with Capital's Student Success Guide.

IV. Instructional Technology and Innovation
  • Promote and support integration of blended learning, digital tools, and AI-enhanced instructional practices.
  • Support teachers and leaders in effectively using instructional platforms and technology for curriculum access and student engagement.

V. Safety, Compliance, and Specialized Leadership
  • Serve as the building's science lab safety and hazardous waste liaison; ensure safety practices, safety training, and lab supply compliance.
  • Participate in state (DDOE) workgroups (Science Coalition, Social Studies Coalition, DLC), statewide professional learning, and grant-related audits (e.g., Go Green, STEM, Presidential Awards, ELIT).
  • Participate in walkthroughs, department meetings, instructional leadership teams, and Capital Strategic Intent committees as needed.

VI. Other Duties
  • Coordinate with the building print/copy center for science unit materials and manage electronic posting/distribution.
  • Provide flexible on-site support across buildings and maintain strong communication with teacher leaders and school administrators.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal(s)
  • Summer hours scheduled based on availability, funding, and district priorities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with Delaware certification in Secondary Science required
  • Certification or experience in Secondary Social Studies preferred
  • Master's degree preferred (Instructional Leadership, Curriculum, or related field)
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful middle or high school teaching experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in science pedagogy, civic learning, and instructional leadership
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and lead adult professional learning
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills
