JOB DESCRIPTION: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

The Laboratory Technician will perform a wide variety of assays or tests required to provide accurate and high-quality results for diagnostic testing. He/she will perform medium to high complexity laboratory tests in the areas of Serology/Immunology/Microbiology on various sample types including but not limited to tissues, blood, stool and body fluids using methods like ELISA, western blots, DIA and microbiology techniques. He/she should be comfortable with the analysis and interpretation of this type of testing in a diagnostic laboratory. The incumbent will report to the laboratory manager.

He/she will make scientific observations, maintain detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensure all documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. He/she will maintain an understanding of the technological principles and applications of the organization’s services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS:

• Responsible for having a broad working knowledge of lab policies and assays.

• Conducts pre-designed assays using basic laboratory techniques and skills.

• Independently conducts assigned test procedures within constraints of lab scheduling.

• Receives samples from courier, addresses discrepancies, and log the necessary information into the laboratory information system.

• Follows SOPs and relevant compliance regulations regarding safety procedures, documentation, and scientific responsibility.

• Independently analyzes data and interprets results.

• Advise supervisor of factors that may affect quality and usefulness of data.

• Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve standard laboratory techniques, protocols, processes, and equipment.

• Demonstrate consistently good communication and interpersonal skills with colleagues, management, and clients (where applicable).

• Serve as a mentor to junior staff members and assist in training new lab members in performance of routine lab tasks.

• Use and maintain scientific equipment, instrumentation, and computer systems.

• Other duties as assigned.

LAB SPECIFIC DISCIPLINE:

• Immunology (Serology)

• Serum dilutions and multichannel pipetting

• Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay

• Dot Immuno Assay

• Western Blot

• Microbiology (Bacteriology &Parasitology)

• Inoculation of plates, broth, and agar slants

• Colony isolation

• Antibiotic Susceptibility testing

• Gram stain procedure

• Use of assorted tests in the identification of bacteria.

• Reporting of bacteriology results

• Ova and Parasite Analysis

• Microscopic evaluation of slides

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in biological sciences, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemistry, microbiology, or a closely related science field (required)

• Working knowledge of basic laboratory procedures

• Experience handling biospecimens

• Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills

• 1 year of laboratory testing experience with good understanding of the workflow, preferred but not required.

• Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, other laboratory equipment as applicable and audible alarms.

• Experience working with serology/immunology and microbiology methods and technologies (preferred).

• Authorized to work in the US- Required.
