Good Coffee information

What is a good coffee professional?

A Good Coffee professional typically refers to a barista or coffee specialist who is skilled in selecting, brewing, and serving high-quality coffee. They have expertise in various brewing methods, understand coffee beans' origins, and ensure the best flavor profiles in every cup. These professionals often work in cafes or specialty coffee shops and are passionate about providing an exceptional coffee experience for customers. Their role may also include educating customers about different types of coffee and brewing techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a barista, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Barista, you need knowledge of coffee preparation methods, attention to detail, and customer service skills, often supported by on-the-job training or specialty coffee certifications. Familiarity with espresso machines, grinders, and point-of-sale (POS) systems is typically required. Excellent communication, multitasking, and a friendly demeanor help create a welcoming environment for customers. These skills ensure consistent beverage quality, efficient service, and customer satisfaction in a fast-paced café setting.

What are some common challenges baristas face in a specialty coffee shop and how can they overcome them?

Baristas in specialty coffee shops often face challenges such as maintaining consistency in drink quality during busy hours, managing customer expectations, and keeping up with evolving brewing techniques. To overcome these, it's helpful to develop strong multitasking and communication skills, participate in regular training sessions, and stay updated on industry trends. Building a collaborative relationship with team members can also help manage peak times more efficiently and ensure a positive customer experience.

Job description

About Compass Coffee
Compass Coffee was founded in 2014 by two Marines who, after years of drinking terrible coffee on deployment, became obsessed with the quest for the perfect cup. What began as a desire to unlock the secret to perfect coffee grew into something much more significant. It was the realization that coffee is more than just a drink. It's a ritual that brings people together, facilitates human connection, and makes your day better. Compass Coffee has since expanded to 16 cafes in and around DC where Real Good Coffee is served and communities are formed. At the heart of it all is a relentless commitment to quality at every step - to ethical sourcing, masterful blending, and peak roasting in small batches - all to create an experience that is much more than just a cup of coffee.
As a Compass supervisor you will:
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere, and provide legendary customer service
  • Seek opportunities to engage and connect with customers
  • Craft drinks that uphold the quality standards our customers expect from us
  • Taste coffee every day to expand your palette and coffee knowledge
  • Support your fellow team members in upholding our mission
  • Follow cleaning standards to ensure our cafes are fresh, clean and safe
  • Continue to learn and grow-training is continuous in every role

You'll make a great supervisor if you are:
  • A coffee lover! That includes drinking it, making it and talking about it
  • Able to learn quickly, and are excited to learn more about coffee
  • Able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and request clarification when needed
  • Able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Able to build relationships and converse with all types of customers
  • Energized by a fast-paced environment
  • A problem solver, someone that looks for ways to help your team and customers
  • Receptive to feedback
  • Excited to continue your coffee journey at Compass-the opportunities ahead are endless

Summary of Experience
  • 1 year of supervisor experience required

Basic Qualifications
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Available to work flexible hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, nights and/or holidays
  • Uphold cafe operational standards
  • Engage with and understand our customers, including discovering and responding to customer needs through clear and pleasant communication
  • Prepare food and drinks to standard or customized customer requests
  • Available to perform many different tasks within the cafe during each shift

Tip Eligibility
Please note: This role is eligible to receive tips in addition to your base pay. Tips are not guaranteed and may vary based on factors such as seasonality and team performance. While individual earnings will vary, the current average in tips across our cafes is approximately $6 per hour.
The pay range for this role is:
20 - 23.75 USD per hour (4710 Langston)
