Job Summary:

Skilled work in the repair and maintenance of light duty gasoline and diesel powered mechanical and hydraulic activated equipment and vehicles used in the care of landscape at city facilities and on municipal golf courses. Responsible for the maintenance and repair of various pieces of equipment in both the Golf Course and the Parks Divisions. Work is performed with considerable independence within well established guidelines. Position reports to a Parks Supervisor or Greens Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical

  • Trouble shoots computer management systems on all mowers and spray equipment

  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems, brakes, compact diesel engines, compact gas engines, equipment electrical systems, cutting reels, chemical spray equipment, trimmers, saws, and edgers

  • Develops and maintains the filing system and forms to include expenditures for the maintenance and repair of equipment

  • Inspects grounds equipment such as hand and power driven lawn mowers, light duty tractors and utility vehicles, trap rake machines, verticut equipment, aerifiers, fertilizer spreaders, sod cutters, vacuums, hydraulic systems and other related equipment

  • Makes adjustments to equipment in accordance with manufacturers' specifications; remove, repairs, or replaces parts on equipment, sharpens reels and grinds bed knives for mowers

  • Replaces fan and drive belts, spark plugs, points, sets timing and adjusts carburetors

  • Performs minor equipment service tasks such as lubrication, changing oil or fuel filters and motor oils and adding or changing transmission and differential lubricants

  • May repair electric golf cars as required

  • May do minor welding work incidental to completing on site repair of equipment

  • Retrieves dead or stranded equipment in the field

  • Participates in manufacturer or industry specific training or certification classes as available and authorized

EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATUS:As a condition of employment, City of Largo employees will be required to work as directed during an undeclared and/or a declared emergency. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the official job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) and two (2) years experience in the maintenance of pumps, valves, motors and/or controls for lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, etc.; or an equivalent combination of training and experience

  • Valid Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the maintenance of small engines

  • Ability to

    • make inspections, perform trouble-shooting diagnosis, and repair small engines

    • read meters, service manuals, and charts accurately and maintain records

    • understand and follow oral and written instructions

    • input, access, and retrieve data from a computer

  • Skilled in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work Environment: 10% inside a climate controlled building. 90% outside which may include driving.

Physical Requirements: The essential functions of the job require: sitting approximately one (1) hour per day, standing approximately six (6) hours per day, and walking approximately one (1) hour per day. The work requires frequent: bending/stooping, climbing, crawling, fine manipulations, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 44 pounds, and occasionally lifting/carrying of objects weighing 45 pounds and over.

Sensory Requirements: Hearing: Ability to understand individuals on the phone and in person; enough to hear Revolutions Per Minute speeds on motors and any unusual noises coming from the equipment. Speaking: Ability to communicate orally with others in person, on the telephone, and while giving instructions for repair. Seeing: Ability to see internal parts of small engines, springs, bearings, fittings, and drive.

Driving Requirements: Requires frequent driving and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.

Technology: The work requires ability to operate telephones, smart phones, tablets, photocopiers, printers, desktop and/or laptop computers, calculators and all associated software.

Other Machines: The work requires the ability to operate the following machines: mower lifts and tractors.

Tools: The work requires proficiency with wrenches, files, grinders, floor jacks, welders, cutting torches, drills, screw drivers and other tools as required.
