Job Description

1.      Scope and Impact

The Assistant Superintendent assists the Superintendent with the responsibility of managing the property and personnel assigned to maintenance of the grounds.

2.      Essential Functions

Property Management

  • Ensures that the entire playing surface of the course greens, tees, fairways, rough, bunkers and surrounding areas are up to PLI standards.
  • Maintains outer areas such as the entrance, roads, parking lots, lakes, streams and driving range to ensure safety and appearance.
  • Manages landscaping including planning, planting, maintenance and removal of ornamental materials.
  • Handles purchase, storage, inventory and maintenance of equipment.

Department Operations

  • Record keeping - Expenses, weather, chemical applications, inventories, EPA and OSHA, and any other regulatory items not yet listed.
  • Communications - adequate contact with golfers, Director of Operations and other staff members.  Responsibilities may be modified to fit Pacific Links Hawaii needs as deemed by Corporate office.

Managerial

  • Directly supervises employees within the department. 
  • Attends local meetings, conferences, field days and equipment shows for continuing education.
Qualifications

A.     Education/Experience Required

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • 2 to 4-year degree in Agricultural or related sciences.
  • Agronomy/plant/soil sciences/horticulture or turf grass management certification.  
  • Hawaii State Commercial Applicator's License Category #3.
  • Knowledge of principles involved in construction of greens, tees and fairways.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the game of golf, its rules and regulations.
  • Minimum two years' experience in golf course/grounds maintenance and ability to properly maintain a golf course to championship standards.

B.     Technical Skills Required

  • Requires ability to read and comprehend irrigation blueprints and designs, knowledge and ability to apply pesticides and chemical compounds in accordance with regulations.
  • Advanced level of competency in using personal computer and business solutions software skills in software programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, POS, Central Reservation, Payroll systems, Daily Revenue system and e-mail.
  • Advanced ability to manage time effectively to maintain a high level of accuracy in preparing and maintaining all schedules.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and interpret business records and statistical reports.
  • Ability to make business decisions based on production reports and similar facts, as well as on experience and personal opinions.

 C.       Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to deal effectively and objectively with subordinates, supervisory and management personnel, guests and vendors.
  • Requires ability to focus on many tasks and projects at once.
  • Self-starter, self-motivated, adaptable, able to work with minimal direction in a high pressure environment.
  • Advanced organizational and collaborative skills to work in a team environment.

D.     Language Skills

  • Read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and produce manuals, newspapers, periodicals, journals and manuals.
  • Write routine reports, correspondence, business letters, summaries, and reports in English using prescribed format, and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, dictation and style.
  • Ability to speak effectively in English before groups such as guests or employees.

E.     Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and/or hear.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs and frequently lift and/or move up to     25 lbs.
