Job description

Position Summary

The Groundskeeper is responsible for supporting the daily care, appearance, and playability of The King and Prince Golf Club. This role helps maintain greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, cart paths, landscaping, and natural areas to ensure a high-quality golf experience for resort guests, members, and daily-fee players.

Because the course is located in a coastal St. Simons Island setting with marshes, maritime vegetation, wildlife, salt air, humidity, and frequent seasonal weather changes, the Groundskeeper must take pride in detailed outdoor work, environmental care, and consistent course presentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain golf course grounds, including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, cart paths, landscaped areas, and practice areas.
  • Mow, trim, edge, blow, rake, and clean assigned areas according to daily course maintenance standards.
  • Assist with bunker maintenance, including raking, edging, debris removal, sand distribution, and drainage upkeep.
  • Support turf health by assisting with watering, fertilizing, aerification, overseeding, topdressing, sod work, weed control, and other agronomic practices as directed.
  • Help maintain irrigation systems by reporting leaks, broken heads, dry spots, washouts, or drainage issues.
  • Prepare the course for daily play by setting tee markers, changing cups, moving ropes and signs, emptying trash, removing debris, and ensuring a clean guest-ready appearance.
  • Operate and care for golf course maintenance equipment such as walk mowers, riding mowers, utility carts, string trimmers, blowers, bunker rakes, rollers, and small hand tools.
  • Maintain natural and landscaped areas in a way that supports the coastal character of the property, including careful work around marsh edges, trees, native plants, and environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Assist with storm preparation and cleanup, including removal of branches, leaves, pine straw, sand, standing water, and other debris.
  • Follow all safety procedures when operating equipment, handling chemicals, working in heat, and performing tasks near golfers, cart paths, roads, water, or wildlife.
  • Provide courteous and professional service when interacting with golfers, resort guests, coworkers, vendors, and supervisors.
  • Report course hazards, damaged property, equipment issues, irrigation concerns, pest activity, or unsafe conditions to management promptly.
  • Perform other golf course maintenance duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Previous golf course, landscaping, groundskeeping, turf, farming, or outdoor maintenance experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in coastal Georgia weather, including heat, humidity, rain, wind, and early morning conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate mowing equipment, utility vehicles, trimmers, blowers, rakes, and hand tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining a clean, attractive, guest-ready course.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to start early mornings, weekends, holidays, and peak-season shifts as needed.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and contribute to a team-oriented maintenance crew.
  • Basic understanding of turf care, irrigation, landscaping, or golf course etiquette is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred, depending on equipment and vehicle responsibilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, push, pull, lift, and carry throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in warm, humid, wet, or windy conditions.
  • Ability to safely work around moving equipment, golfers, carts, water features, marsh areas, insects, and wildlife.

Work Environment

This position works primarily outdoors on a coastal golf course. The role requires early mornings and may include weekends, holidays, storm cleanup, and seasonal schedule changes. The course setting includes turf, sand, trees, marsh areas, cart paths, irrigation systems, and native wildlife typical of St. Simons Island and Georgia’s Golden Isles.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is dependable, hardworking, safety-minded, and detail-oriented. They enjoy outdoor work, take pride in a well-maintained golf course, and understand that course presentation is part of the overall guest experience at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort.
