Job Description
The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Land Surveyor within the Surveying Services Department of the agency.
Performs moderately complex to complex (journeylevel) surveying work. Work involves planning and conducting field surveys; conducting inspections; taking field measurements; and compiling, updating, and maintaining maps. Assists with the training on technical equipment and methods. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment. Routinely assist other staff in performing duties of greater complexity as needed and is considered a technical expert in the field and may manage and verify survey work.

What Your Contributions to the GLO Will be:
  • Leads and conducts field surveys, processes technical field survey data, ascertains accuracy of the data, makes surveying computations, analyzes boundary construction, composes field notes, prepares or oversees the preparation of survey plats, prepares surveyor reports, and signs/seals documents for certification. Performs seniorlevel technical and professional support of the leveling of coastal tide gauges for the Texas Coastal Ocean Observation Network (TCOON) and GLO Coastal Resources. This position will lead and direct field operations relating to the leveling of coastal tide gauges. Advises, consults, and collaborates on the interpretation, application, and modification of existing policies and procedures relating to the TCOON Tide Gauge Leveling Program.
  • Researches, investigates, and assimilates legal and survey records, maps, aerial imagery, and other information used to make state ownership and boundary determinations, navigable and/or perennial stream determinations, and to identify areas of encroachments on Permanent School Fund (PSF) land or other land in which the State may have an interest; will assemble information and prepare overlays, manually or using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and make mathematical calculations as needed, accurately and timely. This position will lead and direct the survey review procedural process of Coastal Boundary Surveys (CBS) submitted to the GLO by private surveyors in accordance with Texas Natural Resources Code 33.136 for final approval.
  • Assists with the preparation of any products required to conduct or complete a field survey or other tasks/projects as requested or assigned, completing all projects with competence, accuracy, initiative, and independence, meeting all deadlines. Includes the review, processing, and endorsement of archive files/maps/plats/reports associated with Patent Requests, Deeds of Acquittance, and Vacancies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited fouryear college or university with major coursework in land surveying/mapping, geomatics, or civil engineering is generally preferred.
  • Must be a RPLS and in good standing with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS).
  • Six (6) months¿ experience and working knowledge of littoral coastal shoreline boundary surveying in Texas.
  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the worksite) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/ customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience and working knowledge of littoral coastal shoreline boundary surveying in Texas.
  • Experience with processing and analysis of field data required via conventional total station, GPS, and digital level electronic data collection.
