Job Description

As a Warehouse & Supplies Associate you will play a key role in supporting laboratory operations by ensuring the timely supply, replenishment, and distribution of glassware, solvents, consumables, and other laboratory materials. This role also assists with inventory management and, approximately 20% of the time, supports the handling, processing, and packaging of hazardous waste in partnership with the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to capably perform each of the following essential duties:

Work Safely

  • Understand and foresee possible safety issues.
  • Abide by health and safety guidelines prescribed by governing bodies and the TRC. Environmental Health and Safety Committee.
  • General housekeeping of work area.
  • Promote a safe working environment.
  • Work in a manner that does not jeopardize the safety of self or co-workers.

Perform Glass Wash Functions

  • Collect used glassware from the laboratories and segregate for processing.
  • Wash and clean glassware by hand and/or by using automated laboratory glassware washer and ensure clean glassware are available for the laboratories.
  • Assist chemists in locating glassware and equipment.
  • Deliver and restock supply of clean glassware in the laboratory.
  • Notify Warehouse & Supplies Supervisor regarding equipment or other areas requiring repairs and/or replenishing.

Perform Receiving and Warehouse Functions

  • Receive, unpack, and move all incoming materials and items to designated locations.
  • Update all purchase orders of received items as out lined in the standardized work.
  • Conduct daily and weekly inventory counts.
  • Create purchase orders and maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Replenish solvents and deliver to laboratories as out lined in the standardized work.
  • Provide on time and efficient delivery of goods between satellite locations.
  • Provide support for each satellite locations as needed.
  • Housekeeping of warehouse and storage area.
  • Dispose of solvent bottles and drums from laboratory to waste area.

Perform Hazardous Waste Functions

  • Collect, characterize, and sort chemical hazardous waste and other hazardous materials from the laboratory process.
  • Track inventories of hazardous chemical waste and other hazardous materials on-site.
  • Bulk or lab pack hazardous materials to prepare for removal from site.
  • Maintain required stock of supplies required for hazardous chemical waste collection and disposal.
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the hazardous waste rooms following 5S practices.
  • Ensure to comply with prescribed safety procedures or federal laws regulating hazardous waste disposal methods.
  • Operate machines or equipment to move, package, store, or transport hazardous waste materials. 

Perform Other Duties

  • Perform other duties and complete additional projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Chemistry or a related scientific/technical field preferred.
  • Technical experience handling hazardous waste.
  • Must have good understanding of safety procedures.

Work Conditions and Environment

  • The employee must frequently handle chemical compounds including toxic chemicals or those classified as Dangerous Goods and to treat accordingly.
  • The employee must frequently lift, push, pull and/or move objects weighing up to 85 pounds.
  • The employee must be able to handle and maneuver heavy weights of 250 kg.
  • The employee may be required to wash glassware that has residues of solvents and organic compounds.
  • The employee may at times be exposed to unpleasant odours within the work environment.
  • The employee may at times be exposed to inclement weather.
  • Must be available to work for 8 hours as assigned between 6 AM to 6 PM.

Additional Information

The typical pay range for this role is:

Minimum: CAD$ 42,000 / Yearly

Maximum: CAD$ 45,000 / Yearly

This range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for the position.  The actual base salary will depend on several factors such as: experience, skills, and location.
