About the Role
Join a high-impact engineering team building the core retail store systems that drive seamless in-store and omnichannel experiences for a leading retail client. As Lead SWE - Retail Systems, you'll architect, build, and deliver mission-critical platforms like POS, OMNI order fulfillment, and inventory receiving-directly influencing both domestic and international store operations. This is a hands-on leadership role with direct ownership of technical design, delivery, and reliability for retail environments. Collaborate cross-functionally, drive real-world innovation, and mentor top-tier engineers while shaping the future of global retail technology.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical design and development for store-facing retail systems (POS, OMNI fulfillment, inventory receiving)
- Architect scalable, resilient solutions using Java, Spring Boot, NodeJS, Python, and React
- Drive international store expansion-manage localization, compliance, and operational requirements for new countries
- Integrate with Shopify, ERP, OMS, loyalty platforms, and third-party vendors
- Ensure high reliability in physical store environments, including POS hardware and network resilience
- Collaborate with store managers, retail operations, and product teams to address operational pain points and deliver easy-to-adopt solutions
- Design and operate distributed, event-driven systems using Kafka and ensure system consistency and reliability
- Own system observability, SLOs, and incident management with Splunk and New Relic
- Champion best practices for CI/CD, testing, infrastructure-as-code, and release management
- Mentor and guide junior engineers through code reviews and technical leadership
Required Skills and Experience
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with technical leadership in complex system builds
- Proven expertise in Retail Systems: POS, OMNI commerce, inventory, order fulfillment
- Advanced proficiency with Java, Spring Boot, AWS, and Microservices
- Hands-on experience with NodeJS, Python, React for backend and frontend development
- Strong background in distributed systems, Kafka, transactional patterns, and database technologies (Oracle DB, MySQL, DynamoDB)
- Experience integrating with Shopify and retail platforms
- Deep understanding of payment processing, retail compliance, and omnichannel workflows
- Demonstrated reliability ownership: monitoring, incident response, operational metrics
- Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub, SAM, and Terraform
Preferred Skills
- Experience with international retail expansion and regional compliance
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and advanced observability tooling
- Experience supporting peak retail events (promotions, holidays, launches)
