To thrive as a GitHub Actions Engineer, you need a strong background in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and experience with version control systems like Git, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with YAML configuration, scripting languages (such as Bash or Python), and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is typically required, along with knowledge of GitHub Actions workflows. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are critical for collaborating across development and operations teams. These skills ensure the creation, maintenance, and optimization of automated workflows that enhance software delivery speed, reliability, and team productivity.

What are some common challenges developers face when managing complex CI/CD workflows with GitHub Actions?

Developers working with GitHub Actions for CI/CD often encounter challenges such as handling workflow dependencies, optimizing build times, and managing secrets securely across different environments. As workflows grow in complexity, maintaining clear and reusable configurations becomes essential to avoid duplication and ensure reliability. Effective collaboration with team members also requires consistent documentation and version control of workflow files to minimize conflicts and streamline updates.

What are GitHub Actions Multiple?

GitHub Actions Multiple refers to the ability to run multiple actions, jobs, or workflows within a single GitHub Actions workflow file. This feature allows developers to automate different tasks like building, testing, and deploying code in parallel or sequence, increasing efficiency and flexibility in continuous integration and deployment pipelines. By using multiple actions and jobs, teams can better organize their automation processes and improve collaboration on projects hosted on GitHub.

We design, build, operate, and maintain cyber-physical solutions for the nation's most mission-critical facilities, secure environments, complex infrastructure, and global enterprises. With over 7,000 employees, our capabilities span electrical, electronic security, telecommunications, life safety, automation and controls, audiovisual, and IT systems. Headquarters in Tysons, Virginia, M.C. Dean delivers resilient, secure, and innovative power and technology solutions through engineering expertise and smart systems integration.
Why Join Us?
Our people are passionate about engineering innovation that improves lives and drives impactful change. Guided by our core values-agility, expertise, and trust-we foster a collaborative and forward-thinking work environment. At M.C. Dean, we are committed to building the next generation of technical leaders in electrical, engineering, and cybersecurity industries.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities
As part of the team, the Systems Engineer's responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to) the following:
  • Configure, maintain, and support enterprise ALM tooling-including Atlassian Jira and Confluence, GitHub Enterprise, JFrog Artifactory, and Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR)-to enable consistent, secure software delivery across InfraLink and SBU development teams;
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and related tooling, including build runners, artifact promotion workflows, container image management, and integration with static and dynamic security scanning;
  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible, and AWS CloudFormation) for the developer platform itself, ensuring repeatability, version control, and auditable change history;
  • Onboard development teams to standardized tooling and pipeline patterns; develop reference templates, starter projects, and reusable workflows that accelerate adoption and enforce consistency;
  • Operate and sustain deployed environments-perform routine maintenance, patching, upgrades, and capacity planning; monitor service health and performance; respond to incidents and resolve common problems, with escalation to senior engineers and architects as needed;
  • Apply secure-by-default configurations to ALM tooling, including role-based access control, branch protections, signed commits, secrets management, and audit logging; remediate findings from vulnerability scans on platform components and container images;
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including configuration baselines, runbooks, and user-facing guidance to support developer self-service.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Specific qualification requirements for the position include the following:
  • Source Control & ALM Tooling: Hands-on experience administering and supporting GitHub Enterprise (organizations, repositories, branch protections, GitHub Actions) and the Atlassian stack (Jira and Confluence). Familiarity with project configuration, permission models, and workflow customization.
  • CI/CD & Pipelines: Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions; working knowledge of pipeline-as-code patterns, reusable workflows, and self-hosted runners.
  • Artifact & Container Management: Working knowledge of JFrog Artifactory and Amazon ECR for managing build artifacts and container images, including repository structure, retention policies, image scanning, and access control.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Practical experience with Terraform, Ansible, and AWS CloudFormation for provisioning and configuration management; comfortable working in version-controlled infrastructure workflows.
  • Cloud Services: Working experience with AWS services relevant to development platforms, including IAM, EC2, S3, ECR, CloudWatch, and supporting networking constructs.
  • Containers: Familiarity with Docker and exposure to Kubernetes for containerized workloads.
  • Security & Identity: Understanding of secure authentication and access patterns, including SSO integration with Entra ID, role-based access control, and secrets management for pipelines and applications.

Experience & Expertise
2+ years of progressive experience in DevOps, build/release engineering, systems engineering, or developer platform support. Demonstrated ability to deliver and sustain reliable, automated tooling in support of multiple development teams.
  • Working knowledge of secure configuration practices for source control and CI/CD systems;
  • Understanding of network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTPS/TLS, reverse proxies) sufficient to troubleshoot integration and connectivity issues;
  • Exposure to monitoring and logging tools (e.g., AWS CloudWatch, Splunk, Nagios) is a plus;
  • Familiarity with scripting in Bash, Python, or PowerShell;
  • Demonstrated time management and organization skills while working in a fast-paced, multidiscipline team environment;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to support and document for both technical and non-technical audiences;
