Job description

Reporting Location: Flexible across Ohio, Virginia & Kentucky

Way of Work: Hybrid (3 days per week in-office, 2 days remote)

Job Summary

The GIS Technician is a geographically dispersed and cross-functional role that has the responsibility for the continuous development, data delivery and quality assurance, execution, and improvement of work activities as well as processes which directly support NiSource's gas operations. The GIS Technician will review gas facility data captured for completion information to ensure compliance with proposed engineering designs, company policies, practices, standards, and other applicable codes. The Technician will update GIS and core enterprise systems to accurately reflect gas system updates. The data will also be made accessible in accordance with all designated standards for timeliness and accuracy to support operational needs and meet internal customer expectations. The Technician will provide technical assistance and support for all staff involved in the construction, operation, and maintenance of distribution facilities.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs Quality Management for new and existing facility data to ensure accurate and timely recording of natural gas facility updates in our core enterprise systems including GIS.

  • Reviews and ensures all geospatial data adheres to policies, practices, standards, and applicable codes.

  • Uses source data or documentation to ensure the strategic, timely, accurate, and cost-effective recording of facility records in the GIS system.

  • Collaborates with Leader and key business partners in the establishment of group goals, objectives, and priorities to achieve department performance metrics.

  • Recommends, creates, implements and maintains improved systems, procedures and processes to advance department and company goals and initiatives.

  • Accurate and timely capture of natural gas facility data in the enterprise GIS system.

  • Provides project support as well as respond to inquiries to assist with key business decisions.

  • Partners with stakeholders, such as Field Operations, System Operations, Finance (Asset Accounting), IT, and Pipeline Safety and Compliance, to meet strategic business goals and objectives.

  • Provides training, mentoring and support to new personnel.

  • Other Duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications for Position

  • 1-2 years' experience working with geospatial technology including but not limited to GIS, CAD, GNSS, or surveying, OR experience with gas engineering design, records management, or operations records support

  • 1-2 years experience or training in the interpretation and application of standards, codes, regulations and proposed designs.

  • Basic understanding of technical and financial information within the scope of specific design capital projects.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of various PC applications and software (i.e. Word, Excel).

  • Understanding of basic math, geometry, and mapping concepts.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Strong communication skills; both oral and written.

  • Ability to be self-directed and effective in a geographically dispersed organization.

  • Contribution to team success through personal and team efforts.

  • Demonstration of adaptability and flexibility.

  • Demonstration of high work standards with a quality orientation.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Associate degree in an engineering or GIS related discipline. Equivalent professional work experience is acceptable.

  • Understanding in corporate digital mapping/GIS software or GPS technology

  • GIS, Survey, or relevant certifications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of gas operations.

  • Working knowledge of Field Operations support systems

  • Understanding of corporate workstream processes.

$54,000.00 - $75,500.00

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
