They are highly organized and capable of managing multiple tasks in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

This candidate is eager to learn from experienced professionals, receptive to feedback, and excited to support the coordination, development, and maintenance of citywide GIS initiatives. They possess strong analytical, research, and communication skills, with an interest in spatial data visualization, cartography, and database development. Familiarity with GIS software (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), data management practices, or basic programming.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about contributing to projects that maintain and enhance the City's base maps, geospatial data layers, and associated databases. This candidate is dependable, proactive, and eager to gain hands-on experience with real-world GIS operations. Responsibilities may include assisting with data collection and validation, supporting the maintenance of GIS datasets, helping develop maps and visualizations, and contributing to documentation, standards, or procedures.

They may also support staff across departments by responding to GIS-related requests and helping ensure consistent data practices. They are a team player who enjoys problem-solving and brings a positive attitude to their work-whether assisting with project coordination, supporting training efforts, conducting research and analysis, or helping evaluate tools and workflows that improve GIS system performance. This individual is excited to contribute to meaningful projects while gaining exposure to how GIS is implemented, managed, and utilized across a municipal organization.

Student Interns are classified as temporary employees and work variable hours per week on a schedule that accommodates their academic coursework or schedule and the operational needs of the department. Knowledge of: The use of computers and technology, customer service relations, local government functions

Interns must have the ability to: complete basic arithmetic calculations; efficiently and accurately use computer software programs; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and if required, have the ability to work outside periodically. License: For assignments that require travel to locations throughout the City, individuals must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C California driver's license OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled and unscheduled visits to various locations in the City which may or may not be reachable by public transportation. Additional Information Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Working Conditions: Work will be performed primarily in an indoor setting, with some projects taking place outdoors interacting with art, events, businesses, and the community.

May sit and stand for extended periods as well as lifting of materials up to 25 pounds with the ability to sit or stand as needed and communicate face-to-face, on the telephone, and via email.
