What Are GIS Mapping Jobs?
GIS mapping jobs focus on the support and use of the geographic information system, which uses multiple layers of data to create maps for many different purposes. In this field, you may help gather and verify information for the system, use software to track your routes, and prepare customized maps and reports as needed. You may be asked to prioritize tasks, network with others to minimize duplication of effort, resolve customer or client inquiries, and interpret construction documents. Many GIS mapping jobs involve a significant amount of fieldwork, but analysis professionals usually work from a home or company office.

| Employer & Industry Usage | Government agencies, environmental firms, urban planning | Government agencies, utilities, engineering firms |
| Common Search & Comparison | Yes | Yes |
Gis Mapping involves creating and updating geographic maps, often including field data collection and spatial analysis. GIS Technicians support GIS projects through data management, analysis, and map production. While both roles require similar credentials and work in related environments, Gis Mapping emphasizes fieldwork and map creation, whereas GIS Technicians focus on data processing and technical support within GIS systems.

Job description
SYSTRA Canada is part of the SYSTRA group, an international consulting and engineering group, a world leader in the design of transport infrastructures. SYSTRA Canada is an engineering and consulting firm whose primary focus is to offer transportation solutions, whether for passengers or goods: feasibility studies of building a new railway line, increasing the capacity of the existing infrastructure, privatization of a railway.
Join SYSTRA Canada in shaping the future of Canada with this impressive ALTO high-speed rail project connecting Quebec City to Toronto, the largest infrastructure project in Canada in generations.
The ALTO high-speed rail project aims to improve the quality of life of our citizens, strengthen ties between communities, and stimulate economic growth.
Are you convinced that a more sustainable world is possible and that mobility is an integral part of thinking about the future of our planet? Come aboard with SYSTRA Canada and be part of the project that will revolutionize the railway industry in Canada!
As part of the GIS team supporting the Alto project, the Cartography Coordinator and QA is responsible for coordinating the production of high-quality cartographic deliverables and ensuring consistency, accuracy, and visual excellence across all map products. This role supports consultation, analysis, and decision-making for major transportation infrastructure projects by combining advanced cartographic expertise with quality assurance oversight, template standardization, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
The successful candidate will lead the development and application of cartographic standards, oversee the review and quality control of map outputs, and produce clear, visually effective thematic and analytical maps for internal teams, clients, and public-facing initiatives. The role is primarily based in ArcGIS Pro, with data accessed and shared through ArcGIS Enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and produce high-quality thematic, analytical, and presentation-ready maps in ArcGIS Pro to support consultation activities, corridor analyses, environmental studies, infrastructure planning, and project decision-making.
- Coordinate cartographic production activities across the GIS team by organizing priorities, supporting deliverable planning, and helping ensure that mapping outputs are produced on time and according to project standards.
- Establish, maintain, and enforce cartographic standards, including symbology libraries, layout templates, labeling conventions, map series configurations, and graphic representation rules tailored to various audiences, including internal teams, clients, and public consultation groups.
- Lead the quality assurance and quality control review of cartographic outputs by verifying map accuracy, legend content, scale, projection, symbology, formatting, metadata, bilingual content, and overall visual consistency before publication or distribution.
- Ensure map readability, usability, and visual quality by applying sound cartographic design principles, including colour theory, typography, visual hierarchy, balance, and accessibility considerations.
- Access, organize, and prepare spatial data from the project’s ArcGIS Enterprise environment and other sources, including CAD, GIS, tabular, and remote sensing datasets, and convert or format data as needed for cartographic production.
- Perform basic spatial data preparation tasks such as coordinate system transformations, georeferencing, format conversion, and data cleanup to support accurate and efficient map creation.
- Work closely with GIS analysts, engineers, planners, environmental specialists, and other stakeholders to understand requirements, translate technical information into clear visual products, and ensure deliverables meet both technical and communication objectives.
- Publish finalized cartographic products through ArcGIS Enterprise and support the integration of approved map content into web-based applications such as Experience Builder and ArcGIS Dashboards when required.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of cartographic workflows, review processes, and production efficiency by identifying opportunities to standardize practices and improve output quality.
- Provide guidance and support to team members on cartographic best practices, map standards, and quality expectations.
- Communicate effectively in both English and French with internal teams, project stakeholders, and clients.
Education: • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, Geomatics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Years of experience: 7 to 10 years of professional experience in cartographic production, GIS mapping, thematic map creation, or a related role. Experience in transportation or infrastructure projects is considered a strong asset.
Technical competencies:
- Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS Pro for thematic mapping, layout design, cartographic styling, annotation, labeling, and map production.
- Good working knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise and/or ArcGIS Online for accessing data, sharing layers, and supporting collaboration across teams.
- Demonstrated experience creating and managing cartographic templates, symbology libraries, layout standards, and map production workflows.
- Strong experience working with data from multiple formats, including CAD, GIS, tabular, and remote sensing sources, and preparing those datasets for cartographic use.
- Strong understanding of cartographic design principles, including colour usage, typography, readability, composition, and visual hierarchy.
- Experience reviewing and validating cartographic outputs to ensure compliance with established technical and visual standards.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English*
*Reasons for requiring bilingualism: You will have the opportunity to work with a varied clientele, including both French- and English-speaking companies. Bilingualism is therefore fundamental to building strong relationships with our customers, understanding their specific needs, communicating effectively in their preferred language and facilitating strategic meetings.
Personal & soft skills:
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deliverables under tight deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
