Gis Developer Analyst information

What is a GIS Developer Analyst?

A GIS Developer Analyst is a professional who combines skills in geographic information systems (GIS) with software development and data analysis. They design, develop, and implement GIS applications that help organizations visualize, analyze, and interpret spatial data. Their work often involves customizing GIS software, creating maps, automating data workflows, and integrating spatial data with other systems. GIS Developer Analysts typically have expertise in programming languages such as Python or JavaScript, and a strong understanding of spatial databases and mapping technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GIS Developer Analyst?

To thrive as a GIS Developer Analyst, you need expertise in geographic information systems, spatial data analysis, and programming languages like Python or JavaScript, often supported by a degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, spatial databases, and web mapping APIs is typically required, along with relevant certifications like Esri Technical Certification. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting user requirements. These competencies are crucial for accurately developing and maintaining geospatial solutions that drive informed decision-making across industries.

How does a GIS Developer Analyst typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

As a GIS Developer Analyst, cross-departmental collaboration is a key part of the role. You’ll often work closely with departments such as urban planning, engineering, and IT to understand their spatial data needs and translate them into effective GIS solutions. This may involve gathering requirements, developing custom applications or tools, and providing training or support to end users. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential, as you’ll frequently bridge the gap between technical GIS capabilities and the operational goals of different teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the management and maintenance of enterprise geospatial databases to ensure performance, security, and reliability.

  • Implement security hardening measures and troubleshoot complex geodatabase issues to support operational requirements.

  • Support the integration and management of geospatial data across multiple schemas and workflows.

Job description

At the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity (MCIA), geospatial intelligence supports how Marines understand the world around them, from terrain and infrastructure to patterns that help inform operational planning. The ability to quickly access reliable geospatial data is critical to that mission.
This is a chance to bring deep GIS engineering experience to a mission where work directly supports the people who depend on accurate geospatial intelligence. Join us as a Senior GIS Geodatabase Engineer to support MCIA's Geospatial Support Services (GSS). GSS serves as a centralized capability for discovering, accessing, and sharing geospatial intelligence products across multiple Department of Defense and Intelligence Community networks. Behind that capability is an enterprise geospatial architecture that must remain secure, reliable, and adaptable as mission needs evolve. This role supports the engineers and analysts who rely on that infrastructure every day.
Looked upon your expertise to ensure the database infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and capable of evolving as operational requirements grow. This includes improving geodatabase performance, enhancing data ingest and export workflows, and strengthening backup, restore, and recovery capabilities to support continued operations. You will also support the integration and management of geospatial data across multiple schemas, including USMC Ground Warfighter schema, Topographic Data Store (TDS), and NSG-compliant geodata schemas. You'll implement security hardening measures, identifying and resolving geodatabase vulnerabilities, and providing advanced troubleshooting support when complex issues arise. If you've spent years working with ESRI enterprise geodatabases and Oracle, and enjoy solving complex geospatial challenges, this role offers the opportunity to apply that expertise in direct support of the Marine Corps intelligence mission!
Requirements
  • Current active Top Secret / SCI clearance
  • You've achieved an accomplishment of a Bachelor's Degree + 12 years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive GIS and ESRI enterprise geodatabase experience is needed to support a mature geospatial architecture that manages and disseminates intelligence data across multiple classified networks.
  • You have gained strong ESRI Enterprise Geodatabases to ensure the engineer can effectively manage performance, data integrity, and system reliability within MCIA's enterprise geospatial environment.

Required Certifications
  • DoD Cyber Workforce Framework (DCWF) Qualification. Need to meet one of the following requirements below:
  • Education: Relevant degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, IT, etc.
  • Certifications: CompTIA Security +, CISSP, GIAC cert, etc.
  • Training: Completion of approved government or military training courses (e.g., Cyber 101 Foundational Course, etc.)
  • Validated Experience: Documented on-the-job experience or performance-based assessments.

  • Database Administrator (DBA) Certification
  • ESRI Enterprise Geodatabase Certification

If you're ready to be part of the team that ensures geospatial data reaches those who need it most, send your resume directly to Lanchi Lai, ([email protected]).
