A GI Pathologist spends most of their day reviewing and interpreting gastrointestinal tissue samples from biopsies or surgeries, utilizing advanced microscopy and diagnostic tests. They collaborate closely with gastroenterologists, surgeons, and other pathology staff to discuss findings and provide input on complex cases. Additionally, they may attend tumor board meetings, participate in laboratory quality assurance, and stay updated on emerging trends in GI pathology. This collaborative and multidisciplinary environment allows GI Pathologists to play a key role in accurate diagnosis and optimal patient care.
To thrive as a GI Pathologist, you need extensive knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases, histopathology, and a medical degree with board certification in pathology. Experience using laboratory information systems, microscopy, and specialized staining techniques is critical. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills are important soft skills for collaborating with clinicians and conveying accurate diagnoses. These competencies ensure the delivery of precise and timely pathological evaluations, directly impacting patient care and treatment decisions.
A GI Pathologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using laboratory techniques and microscopic analysis of tissue samples. They work closely with gastroenterologists and surgeons to identify conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, infections, and cancers. Their expertise helps guide patient treatment plans and improve outcomes.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (USA). The Emory University Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has a full-time faculty position available in Pathology. We seek a non-tenure track AP or AP/CP board-certified (or board-eligible) surgical pathologist to join a collegial group of faculty at the Decatur Operating Unit (DOU) providing surgical pathology services to the Emory Decatur and Emory Hillandale hospitals. The successful candidate will be eligible for medical licensure in Georgia. Fellowship training and/or expertise in breast, cytopathology, GI, and/or gynecologic pathology are desirable. Faculty rank will be commensurate with qualifications.
The DOU pathology division offers its faculty a diverse diagnostic practice, including annual volumes of approximately 12,000 surgical pathology specimens, 1,200 non-GYN cytology specimens, <10 fetal autopsies each year, and supports a busy endoscopy service with EUS and FNA evaluations.
The Emory University Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers an attractive compensation package for this position composed of a signing bonus and moving allowance, generous base salary, additional variable pay commensurate with productivity, and annual incentive/bonus payments. Funds and administrative time off service are offered to support attendance at professional meetings.
