Job description


Recruiting a Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse to work in the Gastroenterology Department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD, providing care to family members of Active Duty heroes and retirees. The Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse positions are full-time, not to exceed 80 hrs/2 weeks.
At WRNMMC, contract employees shall be required to work varying shifts (8 to 12 hours) weekdays in a two-week period. Scheduling is always based on the needs of the MTF and must be coordinated through the requisite department POC and MTF COR. The specific schedule for each two-week period will be provided one month in advance.
Duties of the Gastroenterology Recruitment Registered Nurse: 5.11.1Duties: The duties for the HCW are as follows:
Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
Should be knowledgeable (or able to acquire the knowledge) about the following commonly performed GI clinic procedures: colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, ERCP, liver biopsy, paracentesis, FibroScan, and capsule endoscopy.
Shall be knowledgeable (or able to acquire the knowledge) of equipment and supply terminology and skill sufficient to identify and use necessary equipment and supplies properly and to communicate proper use with nurses, medical staff, patients, and family members.
Should be able to provide conscious sedation for all commonly performed GI clinic procedures that require sedation
Should be able to provide preoperative and postoperative nursing care of conscience sedation/general anesthesia patients.
Should be able to provide direct provider assistance with liver biopsy and paracentesis procedures.
Should be able to independently perform FibroScan, intramuscular injections, or intravenous medications to patients with staff oversight as needed.
Demonstrate excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation,
both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements in MHS Genesis
Should be able to review/disposition Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic referrals and communicate with providers for clarification. Able to identify referrals deemed as high risk and communicate any concerns to an attending physician.
Schedule appointments, arrange procedures, and perform telephone follow up, as appropriate.
Explains procedures to patients and family members, obtains informed consent, and serves as a liaison to the family members during the procedure
OTHER TASK AND RESPONSIBLITIES THE CONTRACT EMPLOYEE SHALL PERFORM BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
Develops and maintains appropriate written patient education materials.
Supports and/or participates in community outreach programs.
Ensure compliance with standard of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment MTF and IAW JC guidelines. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
Can demonstrate good time management skills.
Should be able to follow all clinic/department policies and help enforce adherence to these Meets personal continuing education and developmental needs.
Complete orientation/competency verification programs IAW unit guidelines.
When assigned, shall serve and participate in committees, functions and other meetings.
Shall report to the Nurse Manager. Shall take directions from charge nurse and house supervisor as required in maintaining a safe environment for staff and patient(s).
When required, participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
As required, participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities,
designed to enhance health services.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - GASTROENTEROLOGY:
Qualifications
Degree/Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing or possess a
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Possess at least 3 years of nursing experience within the last 5 years,
preferably in Gastroenterology. Prefer at least one year of nursing research experience
within the last 3 years. Possess experience with Microsoft Excel to create and maintain
spreadsheets.
Licensure/Registration: Valid unrestricted medical license in at least one state, territory
or commonwealth of the U.S. And shall at a minimum be Board eligible. ACLS Certified
Knowledge of patient care applications and/or the ability to acquire new knowledge in the following systems: MHS Genesis Powerchart, SchApptBook, ReveueCycle, Provation EndoPro and Microsoft Suite
