| Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Geotechnical Engineering, PMP often preferred | Bachelor's or Master's in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering |
| Work Environment | Oversees projects, manages teams, liaises with clients | Performs technical analysis, site investigations, design work |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Construction firms, consulting engineering firms, infrastructure projects | Engineering consulting firms, construction companies, government agencies |
The main difference is that a Geotechnical Project Manager focuses on overseeing projects, managing teams, and client communication, while a Geotechnical Engineer concentrates on technical analysis, design, and site investigations. Job description
Responsibilities
ECS is hiring a Geotechnical Project Manager to support GDOT transportation and highway construction programs across the Atlanta metro area. This role focuses on technical review, design coordination, and delivery of geotechnical engineering work products that support roadway, bridge, and corridor projects. If you enjoy turning subsurface data into clear recommendations, coordinating deliverables across multiple teams, and keeping schedules moving on active infrastructure programs, this role is built for that.Â
Key ResponsibilitiesÂ
- Review and QA/QC geotechnical engineering reports for transportation projects, including site characterization, engineering analyses, and design recommendations.Â
- Review construction plans and geotechnical design elements for GDOT highway projects, aligning recommendations with project constraints, schedules, and constructability.Â
- Manage project execution from kickoff through closeout, including scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables.Â
- Coordinate with and manage subcontractors (drilling firms, labs, specialty consultants), including procurement support, oversight of schedules, and confirmation of deliverable quality.Â
- Lead technical coordination with project stakeholders, including clients, design teams, and construction teams, to resolve geotechnical questions and provide timely solutions.Â
- Support development of geotechnical scopes of work and fee estimates, including proposal writing, budget development, change orders, and invoicing.Â
- Provide technical support related to common GDOT geotechnical deliverables such as:Â
- Subsurface exploration planning (borings, test pits, sampling, lab test programs)Â
- Soil and rock classification and interpretation of lab resultsÂ
- Recommendations related to earthwork, embankments, subgrades, settlement, slope stability, retaining walls, ground improvement, and foundationsÂ
- Documentation that supports transportation design and constructionÂ
- Track and communicate project priorities and deadlines, escalating risks early and keeping deliverables on schedule.Â
- Partner with leadership on client relationship building and repeat work growth in the GDOT and municipal transportation market.Â
#LI-JG1
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications (Must Have)Â
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a closely related field.Â
- 3+ years of geotechnical engineering experience with increasing responsibility for technical deliverables.Â
- Passed FE or current EIT – or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hireÂ
- Experience preparing and or reviewing geotechnical reports, including analysis, conclusions, and engineering recommendations.Â
- Working knowledge of geotechnical engineering practice including subsurface exploration methods, lab testing programs, and interpretation of results.Â
- Ability to manage project priorities with limited supervision, including schedule and budget awareness.Â
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical recommendations to non-geotechnical audiences.Â
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)Â
- Experience supporting GDOT or similar state DOT transportation projects (highway widening, roadway reconstruction, bridge approaches, interchanges).Â
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferredÂ
- Familiarity with transportation geotechnics topics such as pavement subgrades, embankment performance, settlement, and constructability constraints.Â
- Experience coordinating multi-party deliverables across designers, contractors, and specialty subs.Â
- Geotechnical software exposure relevant to design and review (examples: settlement, slope stability, retaining wall, or foundation analysis tools).Â
- Prior involvement in business development, proposal development, or client account support.Â
