Job description

ย Geospatial Subject Matter Expert (SME)
ย 

The Geospatial Subject Matter Expert (SME) will provide technical expertise and strategic guidance in support of geospatial data initiatives for the United States Census Bureau. This role focuses on the development, analysis, and management of geographic data systems used to support nationwide census operations, demographic analysis, and data dissemination.

The SME will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure geospatial data accuracy, integrity, and compliance with federal standards while supporting mission-critical programs.
Key Responsibilities
  • ย Provide expert guidance on geospatial data systems, methodologies, and tools supporting Census Bureau operationsย 
  • ย Develop, maintain, and enhance geographic information system (GIS) datasets and applicationsย 
  • ย Support geographic boundary delineation, mapping, and spatial data validation effortsย 
  • ย Perform spatial analysis to support demographic, economic, and population studiesย 
  • ย Ensure compliance with federal geospatial standards, including FGDC and Census geographic programsย 
  • ย Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and IT teams to integrate geospatial data into enterprise systemsย 
  • ย Support modernization initiatives involving cloud-based GIS platforms and data automationย 
  • ย Review and validate geospatial deliverables to ensure accuracy and completenessย 
  • ย Provide technical documentation, reports, and briefings to stakeholdersย 
Required Qualifications
  • ย Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, or related field (Master's preferred)ย 
  • ย 5+ years of experience in geospatial analysis, GIS development, or related disciplineย 
  • ย Strong experience with GIS tools such as Esri ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platformsย 
  • ย Knowledge of Census Bureau geographic programs (e.g., TIGER/Line, MAF/TIGER database)ย 
  • ย Experience with spatial databases (PostGIS, SQL Server, Oracle Spatial)ย 
  • ย Familiarity with Python, R, or other scripting languages for geospatial analysisย 
  • ย Understanding of federal data standards and geospatial frameworksย 
  • ย Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skillsย 
Preferred Qualifications
  • ย Prior experience supporting federal agencies or Census Bureau programsย 
  • ย Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) for geospatial data processingย 
  • ย Knowledge of data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI)ย 
  • ย Experience with big data geospatial processing and automation pipelinesย 
Security Requirements
  • ย Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance (or higher, if required)
