How much do geospatial data visualization jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for geospatial data visualization in the United States is $109,451.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,000.00 and $123,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is geospatial data visualization?

Geospatial data visualization is the process of displaying data that has a geographic or spatial component on maps or other visual formats. This helps users understand patterns, trends, and relationships within geographic data, making complex information easier to interpret and act upon. Common examples include heat maps, choropleth maps, and interactive dashboards that display things like population density, weather patterns, or transportation networks. Geospatial visualization is widely used in fields such as urban planning, environmental science, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geospatial data visualization specialist?

To thrive as a Geospatial Data Visualization Specialist, you need strong skills in GIS concepts, spatial analysis, cartography, and a relevant degree in geography, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, Python libraries (e.g., GeoPandas, Folium), and data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to communicate complex spatial data clearly are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for transforming geospatial data into actionable insights, supporting informed decision-making across industries.

How does a geospatial data visualization specialist typically collaborate with other teams within an organization?

Geospatial Data Visualization specialists often work closely with GIS analysts, data scientists, and project managers to transform complex spatial data into accessible visual formats. They may also coordinate with software developers to integrate maps and dashboards into applications, and with stakeholders to ensure that visualizations meet project goals. Regular communication and feedback loops are essential, as these collaborations help align technical outputs with business objectives and user needs.

What is the difference between Geospatial Data Visualization vs GIS Analyst?

AspectGeospatial Data VisualizationGIS Analyst
CredentialsGIS certifications, GIS-related degreesGIS certifications, GIS degrees
Work EnvironmentData visualization tools, GIS software, mapping platformsGIS software, spatial data analysis environments
Industry UsageMapping, data storytelling, presentationData analysis, spatial data management, mapping

While both roles involve working with geospatial data, Geospatial Data Visualization primarily focuses on creating visual representations of spatial data to communicate insights. In contrast, a GIS Analyst performs comprehensive spatial data analysis, management, and interpretation. Both roles often overlap but serve different core functions within geospatial projects.

Job Title: Senior Geospatial Data Engineer
Job Category: Engineering
Time Type: Full time
Minimum Clearance Required to Start: TS/SCI
Employee Type: Regular
Percentage of Travel Required: Up to 10%
Type of Travel: Continental US
Anticipated Posting End: 1/1/2027
The Opportunity:
CACI's AGIS Release Train delivers the geospatial data infrastructure and analytical capabilities that NGA analysts rely on every day to drive intelligence decisions. Our team operates at the intersection of cutting-edge open-source geospatial technology and mission-critical intelligence workflows - building the pipelines, visualization tools, and analytical environments that transform raw geospatial data into decision advantage.
As a Senior Geospatial Data Engineer, you will lead pipeline development, tool integration, and visualization capability delivery across a FOSS4G-centric stack. You will work directly with NGA mission users and AGIS delivery teams to shape how intelligence professionals interact with geospatial data - from ingest all the way to analyst-facing visualization.
Responsibilities:
Design and deliver end-to-end geospatial data pipelines from ingest through analyst-facing visualization, leveraging GDAL/OGR-based transformation and processing across diverse data formats
Develop and maintain Python-based analytical environments via Jupyter Notebooks tailored to NGA mission user workflows
Manage GeoParquet datasets within the program's data lake architecture; implement and extend columnar format pipelines for production use
Administer ArcGIS Server services and portal configurations; integrate with the FOSS4G toolchain including QGIS, GeoServer, and MapServer
Collaborate with the AGIS Search team on spatial data indexing and AI-assisted retrieval integration
Lead technical refinement sessions and provide PI Planning input on data engineering epics and cross-team dependencies
Qualifications:
Required:
Active TS/SCI clearance
8+ years of software or data engineering experience, with at least 5 years in geospatial domains
Proficiency in the Python geospatial stack: GDAL, Fiona, Shapely, GeoPandas, Rasterio
Strong Jupyter Notebook development experience for analytical and mission workflows
Working knowledge of the FOSS4G ecosystem (QGIS, GeoServer, MapServer, GRASS)
GeoParquet/columnar format experience in production environments
ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Enterprise administration
B.S. in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, or related field (equivalent experience accepted)
Desired:
Familiarity with OGC service standards (WMS, WFS, WCS)
Experience operating within SAFe or Agile delivery frameworks
CI Poly clearance
