Full Stack Software Engineer

Job description

About Bridger Photonics, Inc.
Bridger Photonics is at the forefront of developing and deploying cutting-edge methane emissions detection technology for the oil and gas sector. Our Gas Mapping LiDAR technology drives industry standards by offering a simple and efficient way for the oil and gas industry to reduce methane emissions and improve overall safety. By scanning oil and gas infrastructures from the air, we are pinpointing methane leaks, quantifying methane emission rates, and providing our customers with actionable data to address them.
With a cloud migration and stack modernization largely behind us, we're turning our attention to what matters next: scaling our platform to a global footprint and sharpening the tooling and processes that keep us moving fast. This role sits at the center of that work - we're looking for a strong engineer to help us build, scale, and operate the software that powers our mission.
About the role
We are seeking a Software Engineer to join our technology organization as we build and scale the next generation of methane detection and geospatial data platforms. In this role, you will work alongside other software engineers and the product team to design, develop, and maintain applications and services that enable our customers to respond to methane emissions faster than ever before. Along the way, you'll engage with geospatial data and data science domains, building modern tooling that bridges those worlds into a cohesive platform.
You will take ownership of features and components throughout their full lifecycle - from design through implementation, testing, and deployment. You'll collaborate with team members and leadership to translate requirements into robust, well-tested software. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll write and ship production code, participate in code reviews, and contribute to architectural decisions.
How we work
We are curious problem solvers first. Before writing code, we want to understand what our customers need, what the data says, and where the real constraint sits. Writing software is ultimately a social act - we work closely with our product organization and the people who depend on what we build.
To achieve high quality products that are built efficiently, we are an AI-forward engineering organization. Tools like Claude Code are part of our daily practice, not an experiment on the side - we use them to plan work, write and review code, and move faster than a team our size otherwise could. We're intentional about agentic tools working as thought partners, not thought replacements: in this role, it's critical that you understand the intent of a given piece of software, the architecture you're working within, how to properly test your work, and validate outputs.
We prototype quickly to learn what a problem really is, then build carefully around what we learned. We value engineers who think from first principles while respecting the systems already in place, and of course- who leave code better than they found it.
What you'll do
  • Collaborate with fellow engineers, the product team, and stakeholders to build high-quality tools that meet real business objectives
  • Develop and maintain full-stack features across our modern web applications, from backend APIs to responsive, intuitive frontend user interfaces
  • Create geospatial data visualizations and map-based interfaces leveraging Mapbox GL JS and deck.gl
  • Design and consume event-driven services using Kafka for real-time data streaming and system integration
  • Build and operate cloud-native infrastructure - AWS services (SQS, SNS, S3, MSK), Docker containers, Kubernetes/ArgoCD, and background job workers
  • Ship changes through GitLab CI/CD and evolve database schemas through versioned migrations (Flyway)
  • Instrument what you build with logging, metrics, and alerting so problems surface before customers find them
  • Take ownership of features, services, and components end to end - shaping the technical design, evaluating tradeoffs, shipping the code, and operating it in production
  • Participate in on-call rotation

What we're looking for:
  • 4-6 years of professional software development experience, with a proven track record of shipping robust, production-grade applications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent demonstrated experience)
  • Hands-on experience with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Codex CLI, or similar), and the judgment to review, test, and push back on what they produce
  • Strong command of at least one backend language (Python preferred) and working fluency with SQL and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
  • Working knowledge of modern web-based frontend development - JavaScript/TypeScript and React or an equivalent framework
  • Excellent written and verbal communication - you can walk another engineer through a tradeoff and explain the same decision to someone outside the team
  • Self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and equally comfortable giving and receiving direction
  • Comfort learning new technologies and adapting to changing priorities

Qualifications
  • FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar Python web frameworks
  • PostgreSQL/PostGIS and geospatial query optimization
  • Next.js and modern React/TypeScript tooling
  • Web mapping and visualization libraries (Mapbox GL JS, deck.gl, Leaflet)
  • Event streaming platforms (Kafka preferred) or other message broker systems
  • Cloud platforms (AWS preferred - S3, SQS, SNS, MSK), containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform) or GitOps workflows
  • Observability tools and practices - logging, metrics, alerting
  • Geospatial data processing, remote sensing, or the energy sector
  • GIS tools and libraries (GDAL, PDAL, QGIS, GeoPandas, Fiona, etc.)

Additional Information
What we're looking for:
  • Path for growth and advancement within technology organization
  • Exposure to cutting-edge geospatial and sensing technologies
  • Excellent health, dental, and retirement benefits
  • Beautiful Bozeman, Montana location with unparalleled outdoor opportunities
  • Mission-driven work with meaningful environmental impact

More:
  • This is a full-time salaried position based in Bozeman, MT (open to remote candidates)
  • Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and skills
  • Position includes participation in on-call rotation
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis; we are unable to sponsor employment visas at this time
  • Equal Opportunity Employer
