Geospatial Analysis Intern information

What does a Geospatial Analysis Intern do?

A Geospatial Analysis Intern assists with collecting, processing, and analyzing geographic data using tools like GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and remote sensing software. They help create maps, interpret satellite imagery, and support projects that require spatial analysis, such as urban planning, environmental assessment, or transportation studies. Interns often work under the supervision of experienced geospatial analysts and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and data sources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geospatial Analysis Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geospatial Analysis Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in geography, spatial analysis, and a relevant field of study such as GIS, environmental science, or urban planning. Familiarity with GIS software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), spatial databases, and basic coding skills in Python or R are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret and present spatial data clearly. These abilities are critical for producing accurate analyses that inform decision-making and project outcomes in geospatial contexts.

What types of projects do Geospatial Analysis Interns typically work on, and how do they contribute to larger team goals?

As a Geospatial Analysis Intern, you'll often assist with projects involving data collection, mapping, and spatial analysis to support ongoing research or operational initiatives. Interns may help process satellite imagery, manage GIS databases, or create visual maps for presentations. Your work directly supports the team by providing accurate geographic data and insights that inform decision-making in fields like urban planning, environmental management, or logistics. Collaboration with GIS analysts, data scientists, and project managers is common, offering valuable exposure to real-world workflows and methodologies.

Overview

NV5 is a provider of engineering and consulting services to public and private sector clients, delivering solutions through six business verticals: Testing, Inspection & Consulting; Infrastructure; Utility Services; Environmental Health Sciences; Buildings & Program Management; and Geospatial Technology. With offices nationwide and abroad, NV5 helps clients plan, design, build, test, certify, and operate projects that improve the communities where we live and work.

As engineers, architects, construction/program managers, environmental professionals and beyond, we play a significant role in shaping our communities through the services we provide. We are looking for enthusiastic, driven individuals to join our team focused on Delivering Solutions and Improving Lives.

Position Overview

NV5 is seeking a Transmission Line Design Intern to support our overhead transmission engineering team. This role offers direct exposure to high-voltage transmission line projects and the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers on active utility programs.

The intern will contribute to engineering and design efforts, supporting alignment development, structure placement, and coordination with survey, geospatial, and ROW teams. This is a hands-on role focused on real project delivery-not just shadowing.

Responsibilities
  • Support development of transmission line design deliverables, including plan & profile drawings and structure spotting
  • Assist with engineering inputs for line design, including loading criteria, sag-tension data, and basic structural considerations
  • Work with industry-standard tools such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, and GIS platforms
  • Review and interpret survey data, LiDAR, and topographic mapping to support alignment and design decisions
  • Coordinate with internal NV5 teams across engineering, survey, geospatial, and ROW to support integrated project execution
  • Assist in preparation of engineering calculations, design summaries, and technical documentation
  • Support organization of project files and deliverables
  • Participate in project coordination meetings
  • Perform site visits as required for active projects
Qualifications

Desired Skills

  • Foundational understanding of utility systems and transmission lines
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS tools, or similar engineering/design software
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering data
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and general data management
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn in a delivery-focused environment
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams

Education/Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in school pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical or electrical Engineering.
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and Trimble Business Center
  • Prior internship, coursework, or project experience related to infrastructure or energy is a plus

Why NV5

Our transmission line group is actively growing, supporting major infrastructure programs across the country, and this role is an entry point into a long-term career in utility engineering.
