What are some common challenges Geoscience Software Engineers face when integrating geological data into software solutions?

Geoscience Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to the complexity and variety of geological data formats, as well as the need to accurately model subsurface structures. Translating real-world geoscience concepts into computational algorithms requires close collaboration with geologists and domain experts to ensure accuracy. Additionally, maintaining performance and scalability when processing large datasets can be demanding, especially when working with real-time or high-resolution data. These challenges make cross-disciplinary communication and continuous learning essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geoscience Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geoscience Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, geology or geophysics, and experience with programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java. Familiarity with industry-specific tools like Petrel, ArcGIS, and seismic interpretation software, as well as version control systems (e.g., Git), is typically expected, along with relevant certifications or advanced degrees. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and translating complex geoscientific data into reliable software solutions. These skills ensure the development of robust, user-friendly applications that support critical decision-making in energy, environmental, and research sectors.

What is a Geoscience Software Engineer?

A Geoscience Software Engineer is a professional who develops, maintains, and optimizes software applications used in the geosciences, such as geology, geophysics, and environmental science. They work closely with geoscientists and data analysts to create tools that help interpret and visualize subsurface data, model geological processes, and support exploration or environmental projects. This role typically requires strong programming skills, knowledge of geoscience concepts, and experience with specialized software or data formats used in the field.

What is the difference between Geoscience Software Engineer vs Geoscientist?

AspectGeoscience Software EngineerGeoscientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Geoscience, Computer Science, or related fieldBachelor's or higher in Geoscience or Earth Sciences
Work EnvironmentDevelops software tools for geoscience applications, often in tech or research firmsConducts fieldwork, data analysis, and research in labs or on-site
Industry UsageUsed in tech companies, oil & gas, environmental consultingUsed in academia, research institutions, and environmental agencies

While Geoscience Software Engineers focus on developing software solutions for geoscience problems, Geoscientists primarily conduct fieldwork and research to understand Earth's processes. Both roles require a strong foundation in geoscience, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Salary:

Join a Growing Geotechnical Team

Willmer Engineering is a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm specializing in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing (CMT), special inspections, and environmental services. As our Geotechnical team continues to grow, we are seeking a Geologist or Geologist-in-Training (GIT) to support a variety of commercial, industrial, transportation, and public infrastructure projects.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving subsurface challenges, and collaborating with engineers to deliver practical engineering solutions.

This is a field-focused position with approximately 7080% field work and 2030% office work. Candidates should enjoy working outdoors, traveling to project sites, and being actively involved in construction and geotechnical investigations.

What You'll Do

As a Geologist with Willmer Engineering, you'll support geotechnical investigations from initial exploration through construction while working closely with engineers, contractors, and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee geotechnical field investigations, including soil borings, test pits, rock coring, and subsurface exploration.
  • Observe drilling operations and coordinate with drilling subcontractors.
  • Log soil and rock borings in accordance with industry standards and classify soils using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
  • Collect representative soil, rock, aggregate, and groundwater samples for laboratory testing.
  • Prepare boring logs, field reports, geologic maps, cross-sections, and technical documentation.
  • Assist geotechnical engineers in evaluating subsurface conditions and developing recommendations for foundations, pavements, retaining walls, earthwork, and slope stability.
  • Perform construction observation and quality assurance activities related to earthwork, foundations, and other geotechnical construction.
  • Support Construction Materials Testing (CMT) activities as needed.
  • Review laboratory and field testing data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation while following company safety standards and procedures.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related geoscience field.
  • Geologist-in-Training (GIT) certification or the ability to obtain it is highly preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in geology, geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, or related consulting (entry-level candidates with strong internships are encouraged to apply).
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in both field and office environments.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk on uneven terrain and active construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and willingness to travel to project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Geologist (PG) license or actively working toward licensure.
  • Experience logging soil borings and rock core.
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards and geotechnical laboratory testing.
  • Experience with Construction Materials Testing (CMT).
  • Experience with gINT, OpenGround, or similar boring log software.
  • Experience working on DOT, transportation, commercial, industrial, or municipal projects.
