Geotechnical Associate – Energy Investment Banking

Moelis & Company | Houston, TX

Moelis & Company is seeking a Geotechnical Associate to support its Energy Investment Banking team. This role provides critical data management, subsurface support, and technical analysis for upstream oil & gas M&A and strategic advisory transactions.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in geoscience data management, subsurface workflows, and geospatial analysis with the ability to operate in a fast‑paced, deal‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain geoscience datasets and project environments (well logs, core data, etc.) to support active M&A and advisory processes.
  • Ensure data integrity, consistency, and quality control across internal databases, interpretation software, and client data rooms.
  • Build and maintain Petra projects, including data loading, validation, and ongoing updates.
  • Support geologists and deal teams with mapping, cross sections, and subsurface data visualization.
  • Generate acreage maps, rig activity maps, and well performance visuals to support client presentations and marketing materials.
  • Assist in preparation of technical materials for management presentations and data rooms.
  • Coordinate with clients and third‑party data providers to acquire, organize, and QC datasets.
  • Support virtual data room setup and management, ensuring accurate and well‑organized technical content.
  • Partner with geologists, engineers, and bankers to ensure seamless data integration and workflow efficiency across transactions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data workflows, systems, and processes in a high‑volume deal environment.
Qualifications
  • 4–10 years of experience in oil & gas, preferably in a geotechnical or geoscience data management role.
  • Strong experience with Petra and/or other geoscience subsurface platforms.
  • Proficiency with industry data sources such as Enverus.
  • Experience managing well data, wireline logs, and GIS datasets, including QC and integration across systems.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS or QGIS and spatial data management.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and data organization tools.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across technical and non‑technical teams.
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a transaction‑oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting A&D, investment banking, or transaction processes.
  • Familiarity with unconventional resource plays and basin‑level datasets.
  • Exposure to Spotfire, or other data visualization tools.
  • Background in geology, geophysics, GIS, or related technical discipline.
