Geophysics Postdoc information

What are some common collaborative projects a Geophysics Postdoc might be involved in, and how do they typically work with interdisciplinary teams?

As a Geophysics Postdoc, you will often participate in collaborative projects that involve working closely with experts from geology, engineering, and computer science. These projects may include field data collection, geophysical modeling, and the interpretation of complex datasets for natural resource exploration or environmental studies. Postdocs frequently contribute specialized knowledge in areas like seismic imaging or computational geophysics and are expected to communicate findings clearly to non-specialists. This interdisciplinary teamwork fosters a dynamic environment and provides opportunities to broaden your skill set and professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geophysics Postdoc, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geophysics Postdoc, you typically need a Ph.D. in geophysics or a related field, with a strong background in quantitative research and data analysis. Familiarity with scientific programming languages (such as Python or MATLAB), geophysical modeling software, and data visualization tools is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaborative skills help in publishing research and working within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for advancing scientific understanding and contributing impactful research in the geosciences.

What are Geophysics Postdocs?

Geophysics Postdocs are researchers who have recently earned their PhD in geophysics or a related field and are undertaking further specialized research under the supervision of senior scientists. Their work typically involves studying the physical processes and properties of the Earth, such as seismic activity, magnetic and gravitational fields, or subsurface structures. Postdoctoral positions are usually temporary, lasting from one to three years, and help researchers gain experience, publish scientific papers, and develop expertise before pursuing permanent academic or industry roles.

Job description

What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Researcher (job title: Postdoctoral Appointee) to join our team in advancing Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) technologies, with a specific focus on Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS). The ideal candidate will have significant background seismic knowledge related to building 3D geophysical models, running, and analyzing seismic simulations. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in stress characterization and explosion monitoring, leveraging innovative fiber optic sensing methodologies and novel source and earth characterization techniques.
On any given day you may be required to:
  • Develop and implement analysis methodology using DSS data collected across short-length fiber optic cables
  • Analyze and interpret in-situ stress conditions using DSS data collected before and after key experiments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate DSS findings into broader geophysical and geological contexts.
  • Build and design 3D geophysical models; run and analyze seismic simulations for use in novel seismic source and earth characterization algorithms.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific conferences.

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary. This position is located in Albuquerque, NM, and the annual salary for this position is $98,500.
Qualifications We Require
  • PhD in geophysics, seismology, or other relevant field
  • Experience with scientific programming (such as Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals and/or presentation(s) at scientific conferences
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire
  • Experience with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) or other DFOS technologies
  • Background in stress characterization techniques
  • Excellent collaborative skills and ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience with fiber optic sensing technologies
  • Demonstrated expertise in signal processing and data analysis
  • Familiarity and experience with geophysical modeling

About Our Team
The Geophysics department performs research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. This support includes climate and energy systems, nuclear explosion monitoring and nonproliferation, global and national security, and nuclear weapons. The department has a broad range of expertise in field deployments, computational modeling, seismic and electromagnetic subsurface characterization, atmospheric and infrasound modeling, sensor and system-level calibration and testing, and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of geophysical data. The department serves as a leading resource for geophysics expertise, and our technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied.
Posting Duration
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
