What are some typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for a Geologist In Training?
As a Geologist In Training, you can expect to spend time both in the field collecting samples and data, and in the office analyzing results and completing reports under the guidance of experienced geologists. You’ll assist with site investigations, environmental assessments, and may contribute to geotechnical or mineral exploration projects. The role often provides excellent mentorship and on-the-job training, allowing you to develop technical expertise and build your professional network. Over time, successful Geologists In Training often advance to roles with greater responsibility, such as project geologist or specialized consultant.
What is a Geologist In Training job?
A Geologist In Training (GIT) is an entry-level position for individuals who have completed a geology degree and are working toward professional certification. GITs assist senior geologists with fieldwork, data collection, mapping, and analysis to support geological projects. This role helps develop hands-on experience in industries like environmental consulting, mining, and petroleum. GITs typically work under supervision while gaining the knowledge needed for licensure as a Professional Geologist (P.G.) or equivalent certification.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Geologist In Training position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Geologist In Training, you need a bachelor’s degree in geology or a related field, strong analytical skills, and foundational knowledge of earth sciences. Familiarity with GIS software, mapping tools, core logging systems, and sometimes possession of, or progress toward, certification such as GIT (Geologist-in-Training) are highly beneficial. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team are important soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate fieldwork, effective data interpretation, and valuable contributions to multi-disciplinary projects.

Job description
The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a geologist to join one of our Michigan offices. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit. Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with performing or coordinating the completion of ASTM Phase I environmental site assessments in support of property transactions; helping to design, implement, and coordinate activities associated with Phase II investigations, including investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor intrusion; interpreting data and developing site conceptual models; developing site management strategies and response action plans (RAPs), including conducting remediation technology evaluations and feasibility studies; estimating costs associated with these types of activities; completing contracting associated with these activities; assistance with the preparation of technical reports; and responding to quotes and proposals.
Other responsibilities may include on-site investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas; aquifer test performance and analysis; and construction observation. On-site investigation tasks may involve observing drilling and monitoring well installation, classifying soil and bedrock samples, and collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis. While the position is in Michigan, periodic travel is required.
The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who thrives in collaborative and independent work environments. They are adaptable, organized, and proactive, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. They bring a high level of attention to detail and take ownership of their work in dynamic and sometimes challenging conditions. For more experienced candidates, leadership, mentoring, and the ability to build strong client relationships are also important. Above all, they value teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering impactful environmental solutions.
Your impact - key responsibilities
Technical knowledge: apply geologic expertise to conduct site investigations, develop site conceptual models, evaluate contaminated media, and support the development of remediation and site management strategies.
Project management: coordinate field activities, manage subcontractors, support project budgets and schedules, and best ensure project milestones and quality objectives are achieved.
Problem solving: evaluate complex site conditions and regulatory requirements to develop practical, effective environmental solutions and response strategies.
Communication: prepare clear, compliant technical documentation and effectively communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Interpersonal savvy: collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships
About the opportunity
Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids, Michigan, offices.
Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs (including up to 15% travel and up to 30% fieldwork expected; project needs will vary seasonally and over time).
Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Physical requirements for the role include:

Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.
Must be able to work individually in remote locations.

Experience conducting communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel.
Experience with staff mentoring, building client relationships, and business development.
Compensation: anticipated range of $75,000-$95,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
