What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geologist Consultant, and why are they important?

A Geologist Consultant typically needs a strong background in earth sciences, analytical skills, and a relevant degree such as geology or geoscience. Familiarity with GIS software, geological modeling tools, and certifications like Professional Geologist (PG) are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for effectively conveying findings and collaborating with clients or multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential to provide accurate geological assessments, guide project decisions, and ensure regulatory compliance in various environmental and resource management contexts.

What are some typical challenges faced by Geologist Consultants when working on client projects?

Geologist Consultants often encounter challenges such as interpreting limited or incomplete geological data, adapting to diverse field environments, and meeting tight project deadlines. They must balance technical recommendations with client expectations and regulatory requirements, which can vary widely between projects. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as consultants frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, project managers, and environmental specialists—to deliver accurate and actionable insights.

What does a Geologist Consultant do?

A Geologist Consultant is a professional who provides expert advice on geological matters for various industries, such as mining, construction, environmental management, and energy. Their work includes analyzing soil, rock, and mineral samples, assessing geological risks, and advising on site selection or resource extraction. They may also help with environmental impact assessments and regulatory compliance. Geologist Consultants often work with engineering teams, government agencies, and private companies to ensure projects are safe, sustainable, and efficient.

Job description

Project Geologist or Engineer

Campbell or Capitola, California

Why C2Earth is more than just a job

Imagine working at a firm that combines technical rigor, real-world impact, and deep respect for place. That's C2Earth. We're a privately held, majority Black-owned small business doing thoughtful, problem-solving engineering geology and geotechnical work throughout the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas.

At C2Earth, you'll inherit a legacy: the reputation of Upp Geotechnology (founded in 1983) plus the innovative spark and commitment brought by our founders, Craig Reid and Chris Hundemer. We're more than "consultants" -- we're advisors, protectors, and enablers. Our work touches everything from safety (schools, hospitals, essential buildings) to beauty (coastal bluffs, parks) to infrastructure that supports thriving communities.

When you join us, you join a team with decades of combined experience, with project files going back to the early 1980s. We've seen it all -- small residential additions, complex slope stabilization, liquefaction hazards, coastal erosion, distressed buildings, and critical infrastructure. Whether it's solving for a retaining wall, a foundation, or a bluff subject to sea level rise, we don't just do the work -- we do it with care, precision, and purpose.

The Role: What You'll Do
  • Manage geotechnical and geologic projects from proposal through completion with oversight from senior staff.
  • Conduct field investigations including drilling, logging, sampling, geologic mapping, and construction observation.
  • Analyze soil, rock, and groundwater data to prepare technical evaluations and engineering recommendations.
  • Draft clear, well-organized reports, proposals, and correspondence for clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, contractors, and public officials to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Balance field and office work while developing project management and leadership skills.
Why You'll Love Working Here

Impact & Variety: You'll work on projects ranging from residential developments to critical infrastructure -- every week brings something new.

Career Growth: Direct mentorship from licensed Engineering Geologists and Geotechnical Engineers, with a clear path toward professional licensure.

Small Enough to Matter, Big Enough to Deliver: Your work will be visible, meaningful, and valued by both the team and our clients.

Integrity & Client Focus: We hold ourselves to the highest technical standards while balancing safety, cost, and constructability.

Culture of Ownership & Respect: As a minority-owned firm, we take pride in the way we serve our clients, our team, and our community.

What We're Looking For
  • A degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus.
  • 3-7 years of relevant professional experience in geotechnical or engineering geology consulting.
  • Progress toward California professional licensure (GIT, EIT, PG, PE, or CEG/GE) is preferred.
  • Strong field skills including soil/rock logging, geologic mapping, and construction observation.
  • Solid writing and communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Team-oriented mindset, curiosity, and initiative to take ownership of your work.
Perks & Practical Info

Location: Based in Campbell (San Francisco Bay Area) with a second office in Capitola serving Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay.

Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package.

Flexibility: A healthy mix of office and field work to keep your career dynamic.

Growth: Support for licensure, continuing education, and building areas of specialization.

Project Diversity: Exposure to coastal, urban, hillside, and infrastructure projects across Northern California.

Join Us & Build Something Solid

If you're an early- to mid-career geologist or engineer who wants to work on meaningful projects, grow into greater responsibility, and be part of a firm that values quality and integrity, we want you on our team. At C2Earth, you'll do work that matters -- for clients, for communities, and for the land itself.
