How much do geological carbon storage jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for geological carbon storage in the United States is $71.51, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67.31 and $72.12 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in geological carbon storage projects?

Professionals in geological carbon storage often encounter challenges such as ensuring the long-term integrity of storage sites, monitoring for potential leaks, and navigating complex regulatory frameworks. The role typically requires close collaboration with geologists, engineers, and environmental scientists to assess site suitability and implement effective monitoring systems. Additionally, adapting to evolving technologies and standards is essential for success, as the field is rapidly advancing in response to climate change mitigation needs.

What is geological carbon storage?

Geological carbon storage, also known as carbon capture and storage (CCS), is a process where carbon dioxide (CO2) is captured from industrial sources and injected deep underground into rock formations for long-term storage. This method helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by preventing CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Storage sites are carefully selected for their ability to securely contain CO2, such as depleted oil and gas fields or deep saline aquifers. Monitoring and verification are essential to ensure the CO2 remains safely stored over time.

What is the difference between Geological Carbon Storage vs Geoscientist?

AspectGeological Carbon StorageGeoscientist
CredentialsGeology degree, certifications in carbon storage or subsurface engineeringGeology or Earth Science degree, often with research or fieldwork experience
Work EnvironmentSubsurface sites, laboratories, field operationsResearch institutions, consulting firms, field sites
Industry UsageEnergy, environmental, and engineering sectors focused on carbon capture and storageResearch, exploration, environmental consulting across various sectors

While both roles involve geology, Geological Carbon Storage specialists focus specifically on storing CO2 underground, whereas Geoscientists have broader roles in studying Earth's processes. The two careers share similar credentials and work environments but differ in their specific focus and application within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Geological Carbon Storage, and why are they important?

To thrive in Geological Carbon Storage, you need a solid background in geology, geochemistry, or environmental engineering, often backed by a relevant degree and field experience. Familiarity with modeling software (like Petrel or TOUGH2), GIS tools, and knowledge of CO2 monitoring and storage regulations are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills help professionals interpret data and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are essential to ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant storage of carbon dioxide, mitigating environmental impacts.
