What is GeoAI?

GeoAI, or Geographic Artificial Intelligence, refers to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques with geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial data. GeoAI leverages machine learning, deep learning, and other AI methods to analyze and interpret geospatial data, such as satellite imagery, maps, and sensor data. This technology is used in a variety of fields including urban planning, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and transportation. By automating the analysis of large and complex spatial datasets, GeoAI helps organizations make more informed decisions and discover patterns that would be difficult to detect manually.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GeoAI Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a GeoAI Specialist, you typically need a background in geospatial science, data analysis, and machine learning, often supported by a degree in GIS, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, ArcGIS, QGIS, and machine learning libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch is essential, along with experience using spatial databases. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this field. These abilities are crucial for leveraging AI to extract actionable insights from geospatial data, enabling data-driven decision-making and innovation.

How do GeoAI professionals typically collaborate with domain experts like urban planners or environmental scientists?

GeoAI professionals regularly work alongside domain experts such as urban planners, environmental scientists, and policy analysts to ensure that spatial data analyses and AI-driven insights are relevant and actionable. Collaboration often involves joint project meetings, data sharing, and iterative feedback loops to refine models and interpret results in the context of real-world applications. This interdisciplinary teamwork helps translate complex geospatial data into practical solutions for urban development, resource management, and disaster response. Effective communication and a willingness to learn from other fields are key to success in these collaborative environments.

Job description

Vibrint is a trusted provider of mission-critical systems and analysis that transform our customers' capacity and capability in harvesting and harnessing data. Working alongside many of the most talented professionals in public service, we work tirelessly to create and sustain new solutions and services that meet the stringent demands across a variety of customer missions.
Our people know they will be doing work that matters at the heart of the national security mission, exploring new possibilities at the cutting edge of technology. They know they will be well-rewarded and recognized for their commitment. Our people know they will enjoy plentiful opportunities to grow, thrive, and have fun as a member of the Vibrint family. Join Vibrint, where your career is a priority, and your future is our shared goal.
We are seeking an innovative GIS Automation / AI Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the Government Program Management Office (GPMO) and senior Agency leadership in advancing geospatial automation and GeoAI capabilities. This SME acts as a high-impact force multiplier, identifying opportunities to reduce manual workloads, accelerate production timelines, and introduce advanced analytics that enhance mission effectiveness.
Given its limited allocation, this role focuses on targeted, high-value solutions, not routine sustainment. Responsibilities include developing Python or FME-based ETL pipelines for automated ingestion, cleaning, transformation, and scheduled processing of geospatial data. The SME will also research, prototype, and deploy machine-learning and GeoAI models, including object detection, feature extraction, and predictive analytics tailored to mission use cases.
The Automation/AI SME identifies workflow bottlenecks and designs streamlined automation tools, assists developers with complex spatial algorithms such as routing, suitability modeling, classification, or spatial optimization, and advises the architect and GPMO on emerging AI frameworks, libraries, and best practices.
This position is hands-on, working directly with customers and Senior Leadership to demonstrate new technologies, produce proofs of concept, and guide the adoption of advanced automation and AI methods across the enterprise. Key deliverables include automated ETL scripts, trained GeoAI models, workflow documentation, and prototypes supporting innovation for Source Leadership.
Required Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience in GIS automation, geospatial analysis, machine learning, or GeoAI development.
  • Proficient in Python, including common geospatial and ML libraries (ArcPy, GeoPandas, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Rasterio).
  • Experience building FME workbenches for ETL automation, data transformation, and scheduled workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and automate geospatial workflows, including data ingestion, cleaning, processing, and validation.
  • Experience prototyping and training machine-learning models, including object detection, classification, clustering, or predictive analytics.
  • Understanding of complex spatial concepts (e.g., topology, routing, suitability modeling, projections, network analysis).
  • Ability to produce clear workflow documentation, proofs of concept, and demos for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Active TS/SCI and ability to obtain/maintain CI Poly.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience supporting NSG/ASG, IC, or DoD GEOINT missions.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Enterprise, ModelBuilder, OGC services, and integration of automated scripts into enterprise GIS systems.
  • Experience developing containerized ML models or deploying GeoAI capabilities in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Knowledge of MLOps, automated model retraining pipelines, or data versioning for ML workflows.
  • Experience applying AI to imagery, 3D data, LiDAR, feature extraction, or multi-sensor analytics.
  • Esri, FME, or AI/ML-related certifications.

Qualifications:
  • Automation & Scripting Expertise: Proven ability to design, build, and optimize automated geospatial workflows using Python, FME, or equivalent tools, reducing manual processing and improving production timelines.
  • GeoAI & Machine-Learning Proficiency: Demonstrated experience developing prototypes and operational models for object detection, classification, predictive analytics, and other AI-driven mission capabilities.
  • Spatial Algorithm & Optimization Skills: Ability to translate advanced spatial concepts into workable logic for developers, including routing, suitability modeling, and spatial optimization.
  • Innovation & Leadership Engagement: Experience working directly with customers and senior leaders, producing proofs of concept, presenting emerging technologies, and guiding enterprise adoption of AI and automation.
  • Active Top Secret Clearance (SCI and CI/Poly Eligible).

Vibrint's comprehensive compensation package includes but is not limited to: competitive salary; annual merit-based salary increases and discretionary bonus program; 401(k) plan with a company contribution; 11 paid federal holidays; 160 hours of paid time off; medical, dental, vision, life and short- & long-term disability insurance; employee assistance program; and a generous professional development allowance.
