What is a genomics job?

A genomics job involves studying an organism's entire genetic makeup to understand gene functions, interactions, and variations. Professionals in this field work in research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or biotechnology, using advanced tools like sequencing technologies and bioinformatics. Their work can help in disease research, precision medicine, agriculture, and evolutionary biology. Common roles include genomic scientists, bioinformaticians, and clinical geneticists.

What are typical daily responsibilities for someone working in genomics?

Professionals in Genomics typically spend their days designing experiments, preparing and processing biological samples, and conducting analyses using high-throughput sequencing technologies. They also interpret large datasets using specialized bioinformatics tools, prepare reports or present findings to stakeholders, and collaborate with other scientists such as clinicians, computational biologists, or data analysts. The work environment can be a mix of laboratory work and computational data analysis, depending on the specific position. Regular team meetings and collaboration are common, especially in research or clinical settings where interdisciplinary problem-solving is essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the genomics position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Genomics role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by an advanced degree in a life science and relevant laboratory experience. Proficiency with genomic sequencing platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), data analysis software, and experience with databases like NCBI or Ensembl are commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative communication are essential soft skills for interpreting complex data and working within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are important for ensuring accurate genetic analysis, driving research projects, and making meaningful scientific contributions.

Does genomics pay well?

Genomics professionals, such as genomic scientists and bioinformaticians, typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start around $50,000 to $70,000 annually, while experienced specialists can earn over $100,000, especially with advanced skills in data analysis and laboratory techniques.

Is genomics a good career?

Genomics is a growing field that involves studying an organism's complete set of DNA. Careers in genomics often require strong skills in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and laboratory techniques, with opportunities in research, healthcare, and biotechnology sectors. The field offers competitive salaries and demand for skilled professionals is expected to increase with advances in personalized medicine and genetic research.

What jobs can you get with a genomics degree?

A genomics degree can lead to roles such as genomic researcher, bioinformatics analyst, laboratory technician, or clinical geneticist. These jobs often require skills in molecular biology, data analysis, and familiarity with sequencing technologies and software tools.

What skills do you need for genomics?

Genomics professionals need strong skills in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, including proficiency with data analysis tools and programming languages like Python or R. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of laboratory techniques are also essential for success in the field.

Job description

About Nscale

Nscale is the GPU cloud engineered for AI. We provide cost-effective, high-performance infrastructure for AI start-ups and large enterprise customers. Nscale enables AI-focused companies to achieve superior results by reducing the complexity of AI development. Our GPU cloud bolsters technical capabilities and directly supports strategic business outcomes, including cost management, rapid innovation, and environmental responsibility.

We thrive on a culture of relentless innovation, ownership, and accountability, where every team member takes pride in their work and drives it with excellence and urgency. As an Nscaler, you'll build trust through openness and transparency, where everyone is inspired to do their best work. If you join our team, you'll be contributing to building the technology that powers the future.

About the Role

The Healthcare & Life Sciences (HCLS) sector is undergoing a massive transformation, requiring immense AI compute power for drug discovery, genomics, molecular simulation (e.g., AlphaFold), and advanced medical imaging. You will be the commercial owner and strategic thought leader for this highly specialized vertical at Nscale. This is a critical zero-to-one challenge where you will act as a "full-stack" GTM player-coach, defining the addressable market, crafting compelling use-case narratives for researchers and bioinformaticians, personally navigating complex regulatory environments, and closing the foundational anchor tenants.

What You'll be Doing

- Player-Coach Deal Execution: Act as the tip of the spear, personally prospecting, engaging, negotiating, and closing complex, multi-year GPU compute contracts with the most critical lighthouse customers in the health and life sciences sector.

- Define the Vertical Strategy: Map the entire HCLS landscape, defining the highly specific Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) for biotech firms, pharmaceutical giants, and research institutions requiring heavy simulation and data-processing workloads.
- Compliance & Data Privacy Leadership: Partner intimately with Nscale Legal and Security teams to author and execute a rigorous compliance strategy, navigating HIPAA, GDPR in health, and strict patient data sovereignty requirements to turn our security posture into a selling point.

- Product-Market Translation: Translate the unique, high-throughput computing (HTC) and parallel processing requirements of genomics and bioinformatics into concrete product requirements for Nscale engineering.

- Ecosystem Partnership: Identify and secure strategic partnerships with key bioinformatics software providers, research universities, and medical tech integrators to embed Nscale into their foundational research pipelines.

About You

- 10+ years of complex enterprise sales, business development, or GTM leadership, with significant, demonstrable experience operating specifically within the Healthcare, Pharmaceutical, or Life Sciences sectors.
- Deep understanding of high-performance computing (HPC) workloads used in biology, chemistry research, and genomics (e.g., molecular dynamics simulations).
- A robust, highly active network of CIOs, Chief Data Officers, and VP-level research/informatics leaders within top-tier pharmaceutical companies and biotech labs.
- High EQ and the sophistication to navigate highly conservative, heavily regulated procurement environments, paired with the urgency to drive foundational revenue.
- A fiercely entrepreneurial spirit, comfortable building a vertical strategy from a blank page and executing it hands-on.

What We Can Offer You

At Nscale, you'll find a collaborative, supportive, and innovative environment where your contributions spark real impact. We're building something extraordinary, and we want you at the core.

- Highly competitive package (base + equity) with reviews every 12 months.
- Join the fastest-growing tech startup, your chance to push boundaries, collaborate with brilliant minds, and make your mark on cutting-edge AI.
- Expect a dynamic progression plan tailored to your ambitions. Grow by trying new things, leading, challenging the status quo, and owning your impact, always with our full support.
- Human-First Flexibility: We treat you as humans first. Our flexible workplace trusts Nscalers to deliver, giving you the autonomy to shape your day around life's moments.

Equal Opportunities Statement

At NScale, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace. We believe that a variety of perspectives enriches our work environment, and we encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. We strongly encourage applications from people of colour, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, parents, carers, and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
