Genomic Program Manager information

What is a genomic program manager?

Genomic Program Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate projects related to genomics, such as research studies, clinical trials, or implementation of genomic technologies. They are responsible for planning, managing resources, ensuring compliance with regulations, and facilitating communication among multidisciplinary teams. Their role bridges the gap between scientific research and operational execution, ensuring that genomic initiatives are delivered efficiently and effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a genomic program manager?

To thrive as a Genomic Program Manager, you need expertise in genomics or genetics, program management experience, and typically an advanced degree in life sciences or a related field. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools, data analysis platforms, and regulatory compliance systems is often required. Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills help drive cross-functional collaboration and project success. These capabilities ensure effective coordination of complex genomic projects, alignment with scientific objectives, and successful delivery of program outcomes.

How does a genomic program manager typically collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to ensure successful project outcomes?

A Genomic Program Manager routinely partners with scientists, bioinformaticians, clinicians, and data analysts to coordinate complex projects involving genomic data. They act as a bridge between different stakeholders, facilitating communication, aligning project goals, and ensuring that deliverables are met on time. Regular meetings, progress tracking, and clear documentation are essential aspects of this collaboration. By fostering a cohesive team environment and addressing any interdisciplinary challenges, the Program Manager helps ensure that projects advance efficiently and according to regulatory and scientific standards.

Position Summary

The Staff Scientist (Genomics) provides scientific and technical support for next-generation sequencing (NGS) projects in a shared genomics or research support environment. The incumbent applies foundational expertise in Illumina sequencing, RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), and single-cell genomics to support intramural research programs. Under the guidance of senior scientists, the employee contributes to experimental design, laboratory workflows, data generation, technology enhancement, and quality control while ensuring compliance with federal safety, security, and data management standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs next-generation sequencing library preparation and sequencing using Illumina platforms, following established standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Conducts RNA-seq and single-cell sequencing workflows, including sample preparation, library construction, sequencing setup, and post-run quality assessment.

  • Performs nucleic acid extractions from diverse biological samples, including tissues, cells, and bacterial cultures.

  • Supports project intake, sample tracking, and data documentation using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic lab notebooks.

  • Assists with basic downstream data quality control and interpretation in collaboration with bioinformatics staff.

  • Maintains accurate records of experiments, reagents, and sequencing runs to ensure reproducibility and regulatory compliance.

  • Participates in laboratory maintenance, instrument performance monitoring, and routine troubleshooting under supervision.

  • Follows all biosafety, chemical safety, and data security policies and completes required HHS/NIH training.

  • Collaborate closely with investigators to include but not limited to consultations, experimental design, organization, preparation of samples, and contributions to data analysis and biological interpretation.

  • Contributes to presentations, internal reports, and publications as appropriate.

  • Research, plan and engage in technology development projects to further the capabilities of the genomics group.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Illumina sequencing platforms and NGS library preparation techniques.

  • Familiarity with RNA-seq and single-cell sequencing technologies (e.g., 10x Genomics or equivalent platforms).

  • Understanding of basic molecular biology techniques and experimental design.

  • Ability to follow detailed protocols, maintain accurate documentation, and meet project deadlines.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills to support a collaborative research environment.

  • Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving research needs.

Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D. in Genomics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related biological science.

Experience

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Illumina sequencing.

  • Experience or formal training in RNA-seq and/or single-cell sequencing workflows.

  • Experience working in a research laboratory or core facility environment.

Supervisory Controls

Work is performed under the guidance of senior staff scientists or supervisors. Assignments are clearly defined, and the incumbent receives direction on priorities and methods. Increasing independence is expected as technical proficiency develops.

Complexity

The work involves standard but technically detailed genomics procedures requiring accuracy, attention to detail, and sound scientific judgment. The employee applies established methods while learning to address routine technical challenges.

Scope and Effect

The work supports intramural research programs by ensuring high-quality sequencing data and reliable laboratory operations. Accurate performance directly impacts research timelines, data integrity, and scientific outcomes.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in a laboratory setting and may involve standing, handling biological samples, and working with laboratory instruments. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
