How much do genome engineering jobs pay per hour?
What types of projects do genome engineers typically work on, and how collaborative is the work environment?
What is genome engineering?
What is the difference between Genome Engineering vs Molecular Biologist?
| Aspect | Genome Engineering | Molecular Biologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically requires a PhD or Master's in genetics, molecular biology, or related fields | Usually holds a PhD or Master's in biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines |
| Work Environment | Laboratories focused on gene editing, CRISPR, and genetic modification | Research labs studying cellular processes, gene expression, and molecular mechanisms |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Biotech companies, research institutions, pharmaceutical firms | Academic institutions, research centers, biotech companies |
Genome Engineering and Molecular Biologists share overlapping skills in genetics and laboratory techniques. However, Genome Engineers focus specifically on editing and modifying genomes using advanced gene editing tools, while Molecular Biologists study broader molecular processes. Both roles are vital in biotech and research settings, but Genome Engineering is more specialized in genetic modification techniques.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Genome Engineer, and why are they important?

Job description
A Postdoctoral Associate position supported by a recently awarded NIH R01 grant is available in the Gao Lab at BCM Department of Neuroscience. The Gao Lab studies the cellular mechanisms of neurodevelopmental disorders using cutting-edge proteomics, protein/genome engineering, and electrophysiological approaches. The postdoc will engage in frontier, discovery-driven research in protein phosphorylation and dynamic regulation, with a focus on an important subcellular microdomain of the neuron- the axon initial segment (AIS). The postdoc will have excellent collaboration opportunities at BCM / Texas Medical Center.
Baylor College of Medicine typically follows similar to the NIH stipulated stipend guidelines for Postdoctoral Associates.
- Plans, directs, and conducts advanced cellular neuroscience research with a focus on the mechanisms of AIS protein phosphorylation and dynamic regulation.
- Designs, analyzes, and interprets experiments using molecular biology, genome engineering, proteomics, microscopic imaging, and electrophysiology.
- Establishes new research protocols and procedures.
- Provides intellectual contribution to other ongoing projects in the lab, and assists PI in shaping the long-term research strategies and directions.
- Demonstrates commitment to fostering a collaborative lab environment and promoting positive group dynamics.
- Contributes to everyday tasks in the lab and training of students and other trainees.
- Applies for grant opportunities when appropriate.
- Attends departmental seminar series and other departmental events.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
- No experience required.
- Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, Cell and molecular biology, or related fields.
- Standard molecular and cellular neurobiology techniques such as vector design and cloning, cell/neuron culture, immunocytochemistry, Western blot, laboratory animal procedures, and scientific writing.
- Demonstrates ability and strong motivation to lead research projects with minimal supervision.
- Experience in any of the following areas is especially valued: synaptic plasticity, programming, structural biology, calcium imaging, and electrophysiology is desired.
- Be a self-starter, with excellent interpersonal skills and time management ability.
- Records first-author publications in the field of Cellular Neuroscience is desired. Exceptions may be given for outstanding candidates with a clear justification.
