Job description

The Weaver Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Lab Technician to join our team and assist in our labs work unraveling mechanisms of chromatin-associated DNA repair.
The Lab Technician will work directly with Dr. Weaver and other lab personnel to perform routine research tasks and provide routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. The position will also provide ample opportunities to gain hands-on experience with a variety of advanced biochemical, biophysical, and structural biology approaches. This position is perfect for graduating seniors or students who have recently graduated that are interested in obtaining significant research experience in preparation for graduate school and/or medical school.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Organizing, keeping inventory of, and ordering laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Performing general laboratory maintenance including cleaning of common laboratory space, performing maintenance on standard laboratory equipment, and preparing stock buffers and solutions.
  • Performing and analyzing a variety of routine biochemistry and molecular biology experiments using established protocols and procedures under the guidance of Dr. Weaver.
  • Thoroughly documenting all research related activities and maintaining an organized laboratory notebook.
  • Participating in laboratory meetings.
  • Providing routine technical and administrative support to laboratory research projects.
  • In addition to the listed responsibilities, other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Requirements for Lab and Research Technician 1:
  • Education : High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience : At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include experience as a student. A bachelor's degree in a related science field will be considered in lieu of experience.

Minimum Requirements for Lab and Research Technician 2:
  • Education : Associate's degree
  • Experience : At least 2 years of laboratory experience, which may include experience as a student. A bachelor's degree in a related science field will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Skills:
  • A working knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • A basic knowledge of fundamental biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to adapt to a challenging and fast-paced laboratory environment.

Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. This position also requires keyboarding and other bench work that requires finer finger manipulation.
This position will not sponsor visa applicants. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

The anticipated Hiring Range is commensurate with education and experience.
