Job description

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to Parnall located in Jackson, MI. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Associate Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the engineering and design of the sustainable operation of Consumers Energy distribution system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and works segments of technical projects as required and directed.
The Interconnection Agreements and Programs team is responsible for successfully integrating third party interconnections with our distribution system and managing our third-party generation programs. This role is responsible for day-to-day support of the Company's Distributed Generation Program, Simple Renewable Program, and application processes for generators 550 kW and below, regularly interfacing with internal stakeholders, external customers, and Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) Staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design, control, and implement electrical systems and products.
  • Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes.
  • Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment.
  • Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies for senior engineer review.
  • Supports efforts to ensure the installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps.
  • Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by taking direction from senior engineers on coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities.
  • Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation.
  • Collaborate with senior level engineers on the gathering of data and feedback from customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects.
  • Adheres to construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Additional Responsibilities
  • Utilize and enhance the Company's application workflow management tool, PowerClerk, to support renewable program activities for generator interconnection applications
  • Support development of testimony, discovery requests, data analysis and reporting, and other regulatory requests
  • Maintain compliance with MPSC rules governing interconnection (deadlines, procedural requirements, etc.)
  • Participate in internal cross functional teams to meet regulatory requirements
  • Support periodic and ad hoc reporting to regulatory agencies (e.g., MPSC, EIA)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
  • Proficient in design and calculation software
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
  • Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university with 0 - 2 years of knowledge of electrical engineering principles.
