Generator Consultant information

What is a generator consultant?

Generator Consultants are specialists who advise individuals or organizations on the selection, installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical generators. They assess power needs, recommend suitable generator models, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. They may also provide project management, technical troubleshooting, and training services. Generator Consultants often work with residential, commercial, or industrial clients to ensure reliable backup or primary power solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a generator consultant?

To thrive as a Generator Consultant, you need a solid background in electrical engineering or a related field, along with experience in power generation systems and solutions. Familiarity with generator sizing software, load analysis tools, and relevant certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Electrical Contractor License is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and project management skills help you effectively assess client needs and coordinate complex installations. These skills ensure that clients receive reliable, efficient power solutions tailored to their requirements, enhancing safety and operational continuity.

What are the most common challenges a generator consultant faces when managing client projects?

Generator Consultants often encounter challenges such as accurately assessing a client's power requirements, coordinating with different stakeholders (like engineers and facility managers), and ensuring compliance with local regulations. Managing logistics for installation and maintenance schedules can also be complex, especially when dealing with multiple projects or sites. Strong communication and project management skills are essential to navigate these challenges and deliver reliable solutions for clients.

EDP Renewables is a global leader in the renewable energy sector and the fourth-largest wind energy producer. With a sound development pipeline, first-class assets, and market-leading operating capacity, EDPR has undergone exceptional development in recent years and is currently present in 28 markets.

Our company is part of EDP, a global energy group present in around 30 markets with a particular emphasis on renewable energies. With more than 45 years of experience, we have been consolidating a relevant presence on the world energy scene based on the commitment to be all-green by 2030, leading the energy transition. With more than 13,000 employees around the world, we are committed to using our energy and heart to drive a better tomorrow.

Across eight offices and hundreds of sites across North America, the team at EDP Renewables is re-writing the business of renewables. From creating a more inclusive, shared, and greener world to implementing 21st-century technologies spanning wind, solar, storage, distributed generation, and hydrogen, weโ€™re at the center of the clean energy transition. Powered by our slogan of "We Choose Earth", we believe sustainability and creating resilience apply to the energy grid and how we empower our award-winning team.

Role Overview:

The Transmission Specialist supports the development and execution of generation interconnection and transmission strategies for utility-scale Solar, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across North America.

This position will support generation interconnection projects throughout the project lifecycle, from early-stage site evaluation and interconnection application through ISO/RTO and utility studies, execution of Generator Interconnection Agreements (GIAs), construction coordination, and Commercial Operation Date (COD).

The Specialist will work closely with Development, Engineering, Construction, Commercial, Legal, and other internal teams to identify and manage transmission and interconnection risks that may affect project viability, cost, schedule, and successful grid integration.

The successful candidate should have experience with or demonstrated familiarity with the generation interconnection process and at least one U.S. ISO/RTO or utility market, such as PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO, ISO-NE, or NYISO, and an interest in developing broader expertise across multiple North American markets.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Manage and support generation interconnection projects for utility-scale Solar, Wind, BESS, and hybrid projects from initial application through studies, agreement execution, construction, and Commercial Operation.
  • Coordinate interconnection applications, queue positions, study requirements, project milestones, deposits, and technical documentation with ISOs/RTOs, utilities, and Transmission Owners.
  • Review interconnection and transmission studies, including power flow, System Impact, Facilities, Cluster, and Affected System studies, to identify constraints, network upgrades, costs, schedules, and project risks.
  • Perform and/or coordinate transmission planning and technical analyses to evaluate Points of Interconnection (POIs), transmission capability, system constraints, and alternative interconnection strategies.
  • Support the negotiation and management of Generator Interconnection Agreements (GIAs) and resolution of technical or schedule-related interconnection issues.
  • Partner with Development and Engineering teams to develop transmission and interconnection strategies, support project siting and POI selection, and identify opportunities and risks during project development.
  • Maintain familiarity with the interconnection requirements and processes of at least one U.S. ISO/RTO, such as PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO, ISO-NE, or NYISO, and develop knowledge across additional markets.
  • Monitor applicable ISO/RTO, utility, FERC, and NERC requirements and participate in utility, ISO/RTO, consultant, and stakeholder discussions affecting the Companyโ€™s renewable energy portfolio.
  • Communicate interconnection study results, network upgrade requirements, project risks, and recommended mitigation strategies to internal stakeholders.
  • Additional duties as required

  • Familiarity with inverter-based resource interconnection requirements and renewable generation modeling.
  • Understanding of transmission network upgrades, substations, transformers, transmission lines, and Points of Interconnection.
