Generative Ai Developer information

What is a generative AI developer?

A Generative AI Developer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, building, and deploying artificial intelligence systems that can create new content, such as text, images, audio, or code. They work with advanced machine learning models, like generative adversarial networks (GANs) or large language models, to enable computers to produce original outputs. These developers often collaborate with data scientists, researchers, and product teams to integrate AI-generated content into software applications and business solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a generative AI developer?

To thrive as a Generative AI Developer, you need strong programming skills (especially in Python), a deep understanding of machine learning concepts, and an advanced degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and experience with cloud platforms or model deployment tools are typically required. Creative problem-solving, adaptability, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this evolving field. These abilities are crucial to design, implement, and refine generative models that solve real-world problems and drive innovation.

What are some common challenges faced by generative AI developers when deploying models in production environments?

Generative AI Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring model reliability, managing computational resource requirements, and addressing ethical considerations like data bias or content safety. Deploying generative models at scale requires robust monitoring to detect unexpected outputs or model drift, and collaboration with data engineers and product teams to optimize performance. Staying up-to-date with evolving frameworks and best practices is essential, as production environments demand both technical rigor and adaptability to new AI advancements.

What is the difference between Generative Ai Developer vs Machine Learning Engineer?

AspectGenerative Ai DeveloperMachine Learning Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in CS, AI, or related fields; experience with deep learning frameworksBachelor's or higher in CS, Data Science, or related fields; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentDevelops AI models for content creation, chatbots, and creative applicationsBuilds and deploys ML models for various data-driven solutions across industries
Industry UsageTech, entertainment, marketing, and creative sectorsFinance, healthcare, tech, and e-commerce sectors

While both roles involve AI and machine learning, Generative Ai Developers focus on creating models that generate content, such as images or text, whereas Machine Learning Engineers develop broader ML solutions for diverse applications. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their specific focus areas and use cases.

How to become a generative AI developer?

To become a generative AI developer, you should have a strong foundation in programming languages like Python, experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and knowledge of neural network architectures like transformers. Gaining expertise in natural language processing and deep learning, along with practical experience through projects or internships, is essential. Certifications in AI or data science can also enhance your qualifications.

Job Description

What is the opportunity?
RBC's AI Group is seeking a Senior or Staff Data/AI Engineer to join the Commercial Credit team and build the data and AI foundation that powers credit decisioning, risk modeling, and AI/agentic workflows for RBC's commercial banking clients. In this role, you will work alongside ML Developers, Researchers, and cross-functional partners to transform raw, unstructured commercial credit data into clean, reliable, governed datasets that power machine learning applications at scale. You'll design and optimize the pipelines, platforms, and storage patterns that turn complex credit data challenges into competitive advantages. This is a rare opportunity to shape a newly formed, high-impact function-setting technical direction, driving meaningful scale, and delivering solutions that directly influence how RBC serves its small business and commercial clients. If you're passionate about data and energized by the potential of AI, this is your chance to make a lasting impact.

What will you do?

  • Design and optimize data models, feature stores, and storage patterns to ensure performance, reliability, and governance across commercial credit AI workloads.

  • Build and maintain scalable batch and streaming data pipelines that ingest, transform, and curate high-quality datasets for AI and agentic workflows.

  • Implement DataOps and MLOps automation, including CI/CD pipelines, data validation, ML model deployment, monitoring, and drift detection.

  • Write production-quality code, conduct thorough code reviews, troubleshoot performance issues, and continuously enhance system reliability, scalability, and observability.

  • Lead the design and delivery of shared data/ML platform capabilities that serve multiple downstream teams and credit use cases.

  • Drive cross-functional technical initiatives, coordinating with feature providers, policy/risk teams, and client teams while maintaining system integrity.

  • Ensure design and development solutions align to RBC's data and architecture strategy, with adequate technical documentation and reference material.

  • Impart knowledge, mentor engineers, and set technical direction for the team on complex data/AI engineering problems.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, plus significant experience in data, ML, or AI engineering.

  • Strong SQL and database fundamentals across relational and NoSQL systems.

  • Proficiency in production-grade coding with strong software engineering fundamentals including version control, testing, and code review practices.

  • Deep expertise in data modeling, distributed systems, storage optimization, and performance tuning for large-scale AI and analytics workloads.

  • Solid understanding of the ML data lifecycle, including feature engineering, model integration, deployment support, and monitoring/drift detection.

  • Demonstrated mastery of end-to-end ML system ownership in production environments (feature stores, model serving, data pipelines) at scale.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to translate complex business requirements into well-architected technical solutions across product, platform, and cross-functional teams.

What's in it for you?

  • Lead AI transformation at one of Canada's largest and most respected financial institutions, with direct visibility to Group Head and Operating Committee level leadership at RBC.

  • Shape the mandate and culture of a newly formed, high-impact function within RBC's AI Group.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, commissions, and stock options where applicable.

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities.

  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact from a local-to-global scale.
