What is a general packing job?

General packing jobs involve preparing products or materials for shipment or storage by placing them into boxes, containers, or packaging materials. Workers in these roles may also inspect products for damage, label packages, and ensure correct quantities are packed according to orders. These positions are common in warehouses, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers, and often require attention to detail, basic physical fitness, and organizational skills. General packing jobs may be entry-level and can offer opportunities for advancement within logistics and supply chain operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general packing worker?

To thrive as a General Packing Worker, you need attention to detail, basic math skills, and the ability to follow instructions, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with packaging machinery, barcode scanners, and inventory management systems is typically expected. Reliability, teamwork, and good communication help individuals excel in fast-paced, collaborative warehouse environments. These skills ensure accurate order fulfillment, maintain workplace safety, and support efficient operations.

What are the most common challenges faced in a general packing role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Common challenges include maintaining consistent quality, managing physical fatigue, and adapting to changing packing requirements. Job description

Job Title: General LaborerJob Description

This role involves performing a variety of manual labor tasks in a warehouse and shredding environment, including handling paperwork, operating basic equipment, and moving boxes and materials. You will work around conveyors and shredders, lifting and transporting items throughout the facility while maintaining a clean and organized workspace.

Responsibilities
  • Handle and move paperwork and files using a tipper, transferring materials onto a conveyor that feeds into a shredder.
  • Lift, carry, and move boxes and materials weighing between 30 and 50 pounds on a consistent basis.
  • Use racks to stack boxes and push carts, including carts that may be difficult to maneuver, throughout the warehouse.
  • Perform general warehouse tasks such as packing, picking, loading, inventory support, and basic cleaning duties as needed.
  • Walk extensively through the warehouse to pull files and boxes according to production lists and daily work assignments.
  • Work safely around shredding equipment and conveyors, following all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Meet production expectations measured in units per hour and total units completed over the month, contributing to performance-based bonus eligibility.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, including proper disposal and organization of shredded materials and boxes.
  • Adapt to different tasks and areas within the facility, starting at the shredder location with the potential to move into broader warehouse responsibilities.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to perform manual labor in a physically demanding environment.
  • Capability to lift and carry 30 to 50 pounds consistently throughout the shift.
  • Comfort working in a warehouse environment that involves extensive walking, pulling files, and exposure to dust.
  • Willingness to operate basic equipment such as a tipper and work around conveyors and shredders.
  • Reliability in meeting production expectations measured by units per hour and total monthly units.
  • Basic aptitude for general labor tasks, including picking, packing, loading, and cleaning.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in warehouse, general labor, file clerk, inventory, packing, picking, and loading tasks is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to maneuver and push heavy carts and racks, even when they are difficult to handle.
  • Interest in learning different areas of warehouse operations and taking on additional responsibilities over time.
  • Openness to contract-to-hire arrangements with the potential for pay increases upon permanent hire.
Why Work Here?

You join a team that values growth, performance, and inclusion. There is a clear opportunity to move from the shredder area into broader warehouse roles, offering room to develop your skills and advance. Performance-based monthly bonus incentives reward your hard work and productivity, and contractors are regularly included in company culture activities such as swag and monthly lunches, helping you feel part of the team.

Work Environment

The role is based in a warehouse and shredding facility that is physically demanding and active. You can expect extensive walking, frequent lifting of 30 to 50 pounds, and regular handling of boxes, files, and paperwork. The environment can be dusty, especially around stored files and shredded materials. You will work around conveyors, shredding equipment, racks, and carts, some of which require extra effort to maneuver. The setting is typical of a warehouse operation, with a focus on safety, productivity, and teamwork.
