JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary:
The General Laborer Asphalt is responsible for providing a wide-range labor support services to the foremen, supervisors, or other designated persons to perform various hands-on duties including, but not limited to handling construction materials, shoveling, raking, flagging housekeeping, and site maintenance.
Responsibilities:

Site preparation by clearing existing pavement, removing debris, leveling surfaces, and marking areas for asphalt application,
Handling materials, shoveling hot asphalt from the paver hopper, spreading it evenly across the work area, and raking to achieve a smooth finish,
Operating hand tampers or other compacting tools to ensure proper density of the asphalt,
Removing excess asphalt, debris, and waste materials from the worksite,
Equipment is maintenance, basic cleaning and upkeep of tools and machinery used in asphalt paving,
Assisting with traffic control by setting up and maintaining traffic cones and signage, operation of message/arrow boards,
Follow project instructions from construction foreman and/or supervisor,
Direct traffic and pedestrians safely around the construction or road maintenance site,
Safely operate a variety of tools including jackhammers, drills, saws, grinders etc.,
Must wear proper attire at all times including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image,
Required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends,
Additional duties as assigned.


Requirements:

  • 0 (zero) to 1 (one) year of construction experience or similar,
  • English is preferred and bilingual is acceptable,
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record,
  • Must be 18 years of age or older,
  • Possess a positive attitude and work ethic,
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record,
  • High School diploma, GED is desired,
  • Ability to follow the supervisor's directions as well as other crew members,
  • Required to adhere to all safety rules and regulations,
  • Flagger certification desired,
  • OSHA 10 hour preferred,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.


Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds continuously throughout the workday,
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, and twist, throughout the workday,
  • This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces,
  • This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time and the constant use of hands and arms,
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (e.g., glasses, contact lenses),
  • Performing strenuous work for extended periods in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, and other inclement weather conditions,
  • Work may be performed in environments with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and moving equipment.
