Job Summary

This is an opportunity for a motivated lawyer to join HCSC, the largest customer-owned health insurer in the United States, operating through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, Montana, NewMexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Under the direction of the Managing Counsel, Employment Law and Employee Benefits, this position is responsible for: providing legal advice, support, and coordination in employment, labor and benefits; providing expert advice on all aspects of employment law including workplace investigations, wage and hour, ADA and accommodations, employee compensation, employee benefits, employment and separation agreements, reductions in force, performance management and employee discipline, traditional labor, and employment related policies; maintaining expertise in new and evolving areas of employment law; and monitoring legislative and regulatory developments and providing support for implementation of changes necessitated by such developments. In addition, this person will oversee outside counsel in detailed or difficult litigation and administrative proceedings; providing legal support to divisional management on specific business issues; and providing advice and guidance to less experienced attorneys as required. The position can be based in Chicago, Illinois. This is a HYBRID role which requires inโ€‘office hours 3 days a week at the respective company location.

Job Requirements
  • Juris Doctor Degree and a license to practice law in the state where the legal department is located.
  • 8 yearsโ€™ experience as an attorney with demonstrated understanding/experience of the health care or insurance field.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.
  • Negotiations and diplomacy skills.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • 3-5 years recent experience in health care law and/or insurance law.
  • Significant employment law experience, ideally having started out at a law firm, followed by inโ€‘house experience.
  • Experience with employment law in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience working on high urgency, high priority matters with executive level stakeholders that are sensitive in nature.
  • Discretion is a must.
  • Ability to be a selfโ€‘starter who thrives without regular oversight.
  • Experience managing external legal counsel.

Base Pay Range

$146,700.00 - $272,400.00 Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
