Job description

Job Summary: 

The Machinist Technician, provides technicalsupport to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science's experientiallearning facilities, primarily the Engineering Machine Shop and the EngineeringInnovation Studio.  The Lab Technicianwill be the primary point of contact for the Faculty's student experientialfacilities liaising with faculty, students and staff to implement all aspectsof the experiential learning spaces and related extra-curricular student andresearch projects.

Nature of work: 

Reporting to the Manager,Technical Services, the Machinist Technician is responsible for thecoordination, procurement and maintenance of all machine shop and design studioequipment in the experiential learning spaces and provides support to theFaculty's undergraduate teaching laboratories.  The Technician is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the machineshop and design studio and will also support engineering student design teamsand all Faculty related activities (ie. Open House, Experience Days, Capstone/Researchexhibitions,).  The Technician will alsocoordinate all workshop and demonstrations conducted within the Machine Shopand Engineering Innovation Studio.

Responsibilities/accountabilities: 

  • Under the direction of the Manager, Technical Services, plans and supports the undergraduate teaching, research and faculty projects
  • Assists in the design, development and fabrication of equipment and prototypes to specifications using CNC and Manual equipment like Mills, Lathes, Tools, Drills, Saws, Grinders etc.
  • Responsible for Programming, Operation and Setup of CNC and manual machines
  • Follow established routine procedures for the completion of all machining tasks
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of the equipment specific training program for staff, faculty and students and train them on safe operation of equipment
  • Supervise students associated with different student teams working in the Engineering Machine Shop and other faculty designated work spaces
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Responsible for setup, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment and Mechanical Engineering focused laboratories
  • Reviews and develops specifications to determine set up procedure, machining sequence and dimensions of finished product
  • Reads process sheets, blueprints and/or sketches of parts or components to determine the final product
  • Assists faculty in the design and development of lab experiments and equipment
  • Provides training, technical guidance and assistance to students concerning work methods, the safe use of equipment and manufacturing techniques
  • Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing as needed
  • Runs hands-on workshops and provides equipment training for student's
  • Provides technical support to students and staff as well as assist in day-to-day operations within technical services in the Engineering Machine Shop and other undergraduate teaching labs
  • Provides equipment support to the teaching assistants and faculty that is limited to set up, maintenance, training and/or demonstration for lab equipment as well as correct and safe use and handling of equipment
  • Assists in the selection, procurement, installation and maintenance of lab equipment as required
  • Assists and supervises students in labs for fabrication and development of prototypes and provides consultations and supports as required
  • Liaises with central services such as facilities, and other service departments as needed
  • Assists and participates in the organization and execution of various FEAS events e.g. student competitions and capstone exhibitions etc.
  • Assists with facilitating general lab tours
  • Other duties as assigned
