Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry or a related field and four (4) years of experience in operations, planning and general lab management or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Grade 6 (Salaried)
Position Description:
The Manager, Lab Operations in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology will be performing responsible research work that requires planning and completing research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the supervisor. Managing the day-to-day activities in the laboratory (coordinating the activities of a lab with up to 12 members). This includes maintaining supply inventories, ordering supplies, reconciling orders, ensuring personnel adhere to regulatory requirements, coordinating lab maintenance, and maintaining lab equipment. Training other laboratorians on protocols, using instrumentation, and mentoring trainees in the BSL3. Available to train new and existing lab members on techniques and regulatory requirements. Managing other technicians and trainees in the lab when the supervisor is not available. Successful applicants must be able to meet federal Select Agent requirements and be able to work independently within BSL3/ABSL3 facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare and conduct laboratory research experiments.
  • Using sterile techniques.
  • Cultivation of bacteria.
  • Cultivation of cell culture.
  • Maintain mouse breeding colonies.
  • Record keeping: Support scientific investigations by documenting results of experiments; collect, analyze, and summarize data in notebooks and in electronic files for presentations; assist in the preparation of laboratory reports and presentations.
  • Conduct searches in medical literature and databases to summarize information appropriately for a particular study.
  • Select, evaluate, and optimize techniques used in routine research.
  • Follow laboratory and institutional safety protocols and training.
  • Laboratory maintenance tasks: Order laboratory supplies and equipment, reconcile lab orders, maintain laboratory equipment and shared spaces.
  • Train new laboratory personnel on lab specific techniques.
  • Mentor new lab members to work safely in the BSL3.
  • Meet federal Select Agent requirements.
  • Maintain Select Agent Approval and perform duties withing BSL-3 containment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Immunology or related field
  • 2 years of experience working with Yersinia pestis; experience with in vitro, cell culture, and animal models used to study Y. pestis pathogenesis.
  • 2 years working with rodent models of infection
  • Documented experience working in BSL3 and ABSL3 containment, including working with in vitro, cell culture, and animal models of bacterial infections
  • Current DOJ and CDC approval to work with Select Agents
  • Experience working with the Workday procurement and reconciliation system
  • Experience with Workday ordering and reconciliation.

Competencies
  • Ability to work within BSL3 containment

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
