Job description

JOB DETAILS

Department: Clinic Specialty Center (CSC)
FTE: 1.0 (80 hours per pay period)
Workdays: Monday - Friday, Every 3rd Weekend
Shift(s): Days/Evenings
Shift Length: 8 hours
Location: In-Person
 

Purpose of this position: Under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties allowable by law, while maintaining a favorable image of the pharmacy within the hospital and in the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answers phones for the pharmacy department and directs calls to appropriate personnel
  • Maintains knowledge of the Hospital Credit and Collection Policy and other related policies
  • Prepackages, prepares, labels, and hands out prescriptions after they are checked by a registered pharmacist
  • Maintains cash registers, credit card machines, and reporting for cash transactions
  • Prepares daily deposits for the cashier's office
  • Bills and credits patient medications
  • Stocks inventory in Pharmacy
  • Routinely checks and removes outdated and expired medications
  • Delivers medications to patient care and ancillary areas and picks up new orders as scheduled
  • Files prescriptions and reports
  • Maintains the pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion
  • Enters outpatient prescriptions
  • Obtains and records patient drug histories
  • Triages orders, determines priorities, processes orders, and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate
  • Performs various calculations to determine the correct dose using weight
  • Identifies the appropriate product to process based on the prescription order
  • Triages insurance rejections and initiates prior authorization claims as needed
  • Uses appropriate pharmaceutical-medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols
  • Maintains a working knowledge of general chemical and physical properties of drugs
  • Compounding medications as per Minnesota Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations
  • Responsible for safe and careful handling of chemotherapeutic medications
  • Coordinates ordering and delivery of medications, supplies, and equipment to patients and clinical areas as requested
  • Completes intake process for mail service, specialty, transplant, and limited distribution pharmacy patients including new patient enrollment, insurance verification, and medication refill and delivery schedule
  • Documents in the EMR or other database applicable patient interactions according to specialty pharmacy practices
  • Performs patient tracking, processing of patient specialty medication claims, customer service, issue resolution and/or escalation
  • Requests and follows up on refill requests, processes Medicare and transplant claims and works on high level adjudicated claims
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to: back up phone coverage, data collection, reporting, process improvement, and maintenance of patient education materials

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GE
  • Current Pharmacy Technician Registration with MN State Board
  • PTCB or ExCPT pharmacy tech certification within 1 year of date of hire, paid for by employee

  • Current Intern License with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer skills
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems
  • Insurance and Billing Experience
  • Experience working with specialty medications in a health system setting
  • Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or a 240-hour employer-based Technician training Program or 1,000 hours of Pharmacy experience
