Description

Operator Apprentice - Gas Division

The purpose of this classification is to install, maintain and repair natural gas distribution system infrastructure for the Gas Division of the Department of Public Utilities. Incumbents in this classification are under close supervision and learn how to monitor and analyze operating conditions and to complete job functions to maintain compliance with applicable local, state and federal environmental and safety rules and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Installs, maintains and repairs natural gas service lines and mains, and related components.
  • Receives and completes work orders.
  • Performs related activities.
  • Utilizes, operates and maintains various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies.
  • Adheres to established safety procedure.
  • Operates a personal computer and other electronic devices.
  • Utilizes maintenance, work order, or department-specific software.
  • May be required to work after normal business hours, weekends, holidays, Standby Duty or be called out as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by three years of heavy equipment experience in a related work environment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must reside within a radius of Orangeburg, SC that allows for a 30-minute maximum response.

Specific License or Certification Required

  • Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain training and certifications as deemed necessary or required by regulation.
  • Must maintain certification under the Department of Public Utilities' Operator Qualification Program in compliance with minimum pipeline safety regulations defined in 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart N.
