Essential Functions:

  • Accurately read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and schematics to determine piping layouts, dimensions, and material specifications for various systems (HVAC, plumbing, process piping, gas pipe).
  • Measure, cut, thread, groove, bevel, and bend pipes to precise dimensions using various tools and equipment.
  • Fit and align pipes, valves, and fittings for welding, ensuring proper alignment, spacing, and joint preparation according to industry codes and project specifications.
  • Perform high-quality welding using appropriate processes (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW) on different types of pipe materials (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, copper) and in various positions.
  • Test welded joints and assembled piping systems for leaks and structural integrity using methods such as hydro testing, air testing, or visual inspection.
  • Install and support piping systems in accordance with engineering drawings, industry standards, and local plumbing/mechanical codes.
  • Collaborate proactively with the AutoCAD design team, project managers, and other trades to identify and resolve potential coordination or collision conflicts during the design and pre-installation phases.
  • Adhere to all company and client-specific safety regulations, policies, and procedures on all job sites and within fabrication areas.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot welding equipment, pipe fitting tools, and other related machinery.
  • Document work performed, material usage, and report any discrepancies or issues encountered.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of combined experience as a Pipe Fitter and Welder, with significant experience in commercial or industrial HVAC, plumbing, or process piping projects.
  • Strong ability to read and accurately interpret complex blueprints, P&IDs, and isometric drawings.
  • Demonstrated expertise in various welding techniques and processes applicable to piping (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW).
  • In-depth knowledge of pipe fitting principles, including measurements, calculations, and layout.
  • Proficiency in working with a variety of pipe materials and sizes.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, IPC, IMC).
  • Strong commitment to safety practices and procedures.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a contributing member of a team.

Education/Certification Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a recognized vocational training program or apprenticeship in Pipe Fitting and/or Welding is highly preferred.
  • Current and valid welding certifications (e.g., AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.6, ASME Section IX) are required, with specific endorsements for relevant pipe materials and positions.

Work Environment:

  • Works primarily on construction job sites, which involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and potential hazardous materials.
  • May also work in a fabrication shop environment.
  • Frequent work at heights (e.g., scaffolding, aerial lifts), in confined spaces, or in cramped conditions.
  • Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, and high temperatures.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment (up to 75 pounds regularly).
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precision work with tools and welding equipment.
  • Good vision including peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors for reading blueprints, inspecting welds, and identifying safety hazards. Ability to clearly see and identify safety signals, warnings, and signage.
  • Good hearing to understand verbal instructions, communicate effectively in noisy construction environments, and discern critical warning signals such as alarms, horns, phones, and vehicle back-up alarms.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work at heights.
  • Capacity to work in physically demanding and sometimes uncomfortable positions for extended periods.
