Job description

ENSTAR is currently hiring for the summer season, with positions that typically run from May 1, 2026 through October 31, 2026.

What You Will Do:

As a Temporary Line Locator, you will play an essential role within our Anchorage Engineering Services department, reporting to Engineering Services Supervisor. The primary responsibility of the Line Locator is to inspect construction/excavation sites and mark utility lines to ensure precautions are taken to prevent damage to ENSTAR's facilities while residential or commercial work is performed. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Schedule a route of locates based on daily locate requests (may also respond to locate by radio dispatch); discuss locate with owner or contractor (when available) upon arrival; cross-check information with as-builts.
  • Interpret construction drawings and work order specifications and mark location of underground utilities and trenches to be dug using stakes or spray paint; document information on gas line locate form.
  • Observe progress of work and report damage such as damaged or exposed pipes and cables or caved-in vaults. Indicate urgency of repairs required.
  • Coordinate gas construction and maintenance projects with underground work of municipal departments or other utilities.
  • Observe contractors performing tasks near gas lines; may halt project if safety becomes a factor.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Safely operate company vehicles in a constant state of alertness.
  • Other duties as assigned including: collections, meter reading, leak surveying, and construction survey.

What You Will Bring:

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year line locating experience preferred.
  • One year leak survey experience preferred.
  • One year meter reading experience preferred.
  • Experience demonstrating mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Experience performing work requiring a customer service focus.
  • Must be able to pass federally required initial and continuous Operator Qualifications training.
  • Valid Alaska driver's license and be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the ENSTAR's Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass a drug, background, past employment, and driving record screening.

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively interact with individuals within and outside of ENSTAR.
  • Ability to work on own and be self-directed.
  • Basic understanding of utility transmission, and distribution systems and related records systems.
  • Proficiency in operating and servicing pipe locators and accurately locate underground facilities by various methods.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction and repair procedures.
  • Aptitude and ability to perform minor mapping functions.
  • Ability to operate various locating instruments, interpret as-builts, pipe wrench, stakes, 4-pound hammer, tape measure, radio installed in vehicle.
  • Ability to learn and understand ENSTAR's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as they relate to fieldwork.
  • Knowledge/familiarity of road system.
  • Legible handwriting and ability to complete detailed paperwork.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn ENSTAR's software programs (Customer Care & Billing, Mobile Workforce Management, Itron, etc.).
