Job Summary

Under the general supervision and at the direction of the attending physician, cardiovascular-thoracic surgeon, member of the medical staff, and Chief Perfusionist, be responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine, intra-aortic balloon, cell saver, Gem 6 Analyzer, and Hemotech ACT, Hepcon Heparin Management system, blood gas analyzer, coagulation management devices, ventricular assist devices, Intra-operative blook component separation devices, etc.

Essential Functions

  • All team members are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Prisma Health's purpose: Inspire health. Serve with compassion. Be the difference

  • Confers with surgeons regarding the nature of the procedure to be performed and gather necessary information about the patient to be used inconjunctionwith theoperation of the heart-lung machine.

  • Operates heart-lung machine during the surgical procedure performing necessary functions to maintain patient's condition.

  • Monitors a variety of physiologic parameters during surgical procedures.

  • Responsible for maintaining familiarity with physiologic monitoring and recording other procedures so he/she can perform these as directed.

  • Maintains accurate records of each perfusion as a permanent copy of the medical record.

  • Follows laboratory's procedures for handling specimens, processing, test analyses, and reporting results; maintains quality control records for blood gas, hematocrit, and electrolyte analyzer on a daily basis all point of care testing in the department; documents all corrective actions associated with quality control testing; maintains records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested and reported to an external source.

  • Responsible for the administration of blood under the direction of the patient's attending physician.

  • Administers IV fluids as well as such drugs Vasopressor, Vasodilators, Anti-coagulants and other drugs ordered by the physician inconjunctionwith the operation of the heart-lungmachine.

  • Manages and assists with insertion of Intra-aortic balloon pumps.

  • Manages and assists with cardio-pulmonary support devices ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

  • Manages and assists with insertion of ventricular assist devices (Abiomed) etc.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in related field of study.
