Job description

The Visitor Program Associate serves as a primary point of contact for visitors and supports daily visitor services at The Kampong, including admissions, reservations, retail operations, membership sales, tours, and events. The position provides exceptional guest service by welcoming visitors, providing accurate and thorough information, assisting with membership sales, and helping maintain a clean, welcoming, and productive environment.

The Visitor Program Associate also performs point-of-sale functions, including processing cash, vouchers, credit card, and online payments, while ensuring transactions are accurate, courteous, and timely. Retail responsibilities include maintaining clean, neat, and appealing merchandise displays; unpacking and pricing deliveries; assisting with opening and closing cash drawers; and supporting inventory counts. The position may also assist with other duties, projects, and visitor program activities as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Answer phone lines and assist callers with questions, reservations, visitor information, and other inquiries.
  • Take reservations in person, by phone, and by email, and check in visitors participating in scheduled tours and programs.
  • Provide accurate and engaging information about The Kampong, its gardens, collections, history, mission, and visitor guidelines.
  • Assist with directing visitor vehicles and pedestrian traffic in accordance with established Garden procedures, particularly during peak visitation and events, to ensure a safe and welcoming arrival and exit experience.
  • Selling memberships, tours, and other visitor experiences as assigned.
  • Selling merchandise, operate point-of-sale system, handle payments and cash transactions, and assist with inventory control.
  • Supporting the gift shop operations, including plant sales, by arranging and stocking, pricing, and maintaining merchandise in a neat, organized and appealing manner.
  • Review and modify online reservations as needed and communicate reservation changes or issues to visitors and appropriate staff.
  • Supporting the Garden team by receiving and distributing incoming mail and deliveries promptly and accurately to the appropriate departments and team members.
  • Assist with special events held at The Kampong, including visitor check-in, admissions, guest services, setup, and closing activities as assigned.
  • Assist with opening tasks before business hours, including helping the Horticulture team prepare public-access areas for visitors.
  • Assist with closing tasks at the Garden, including securing visitor areas and placing trash and other materials in designated areas in accordance with established procedures.
Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) certificate; or one year of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with students, visitors, volunteers, employees, managers, and other members of the public. Bilingual or multilingual skills, particularly Spanish or Haitian Creole, are preferred.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, with our without the use of a calculator or other appropriate tools

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to handle problems involving multiple variables such as capacity limits,party size, reservations, visitor needs, and daily operational challenges, and apply established procedures to resolve routine issues.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods, communicate verbally, and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle merchandise, cash, equipment, and other materials, and to reach with hands and arms. Vision requirements include the ability to read computer screens, receipts, printed materials, signage, and other materials associated with the position. This position occasionally requires employee to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds.

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor garden environments and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight. The noise level is generally moderate but may increase during special events, peak visitation periods, or other Garden activities.

Pay Range: $20 – $22/hr per hour
