As a new game tester with no experience, your duties include reviewing and analyzing features or specifications on assigned games or projects. When you test the game, you use the developer’s systems to work in a conventional way that matches all the other testers’ work. When you complete your work, your responsibilities then include using software like Zephyr or JIRA to record your experiences and document them before a game gets released. Entry-level testers not only test the game’s performance and identify bugs and errors but also find ways to “break” the game in ways that gamers in the real world might. Be prepared to play each game for weeks at a time to test new versions.
Many video game fans want to become a game tester with no experience aside from playing video games at home. However, many job seekers use game testing as a starting point for a career in the video game industry. In addition to skills in playing and understanding video games, job candidates must meet other qualifications to impress hiring managers and land a job as a game tester. A bachelor’s degree in game design, computer science, graphic communication, or a related field can make you a more competitive candidate. Game tester job duties and responsibilities include playing through all levels of a game to uncover bugs, then writing brief memos to the development team describing the issues so they can fix it before releasing the game. The more thoroughly you analyze a game, the more valuable you will be to the development team.
