What is a game security analyst?

A Game Security Analyst is a professional responsible for identifying and mitigating security threats in video games and gaming platforms. They monitor for cheating, hacking, and other forms of unauthorized access that can compromise fair play or user data. Their work often involves analyzing game code, investigating suspicious activity, and developing security protocols to protect both players and company assets. Game Security Analysts collaborate with developers and security teams to stay ahead of emerging threats and ensure a safe gaming environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a game security analyst?

To thrive as a Game Security Analyst, you need a strong background in cybersecurity, threat analysis, and familiarity with gaming platforms, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Experience with security tools such as intrusion detection systems, anti-cheat software, and scripting languages like Python is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help analysts anticipate threats and collaborate with development teams. These competencies are crucial to protect game integrity, prevent cheating, and safeguard user data in an evolving digital environment.

What are some of the main challenges a game security analyst faces when protecting online games from cheating and fraud?

Game Security Analysts often encounter sophisticated cheating techniques and rapidly evolving threats, such as bots, exploits, and account compromises. Staying ahead requires continuous monitoring, quick adaptation to new vulnerabilities, and close collaboration with developers to implement effective countermeasures. Analysts also balance the need for security with ensuring a seamless player experience, which can be challenging when introducing new security protocols. Teamwork with customer support, developers, and data analysts is essential to identify and respond to incidents swiftly.

KSS is a Game Trust Platform that integrates KRAFTON's game security technologies and operational capabilities. It is evolving into a standardized security platform that multiple game studios can adopt quickly and reliably.
DUTIES
Develop KSS Anti-Cheat and client security features to detect and respond to cheats, tampering, bypasses, automation, and unauthorized tools that may occur in game runtime environments.
Based on an understanding of user-mode and kernel-mode behavior in Windows environments, you will analyze security threats that occur between game clients and the operating system, and design and implement security features with stability and performance in mind.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop C++-based game security / Anti-Cheat client modules
  • Detect and respond to cheat behaviors such as game client tampering, memory manipulation, code injection, hooking, debugging, and automation tools
  • Design and implement user-mode and kernel-mode security features
  • Conduct security analysis based on Windows internals and OS behavior, including processes, threads, memory, drivers, and system calls
  • Review and improve the stability, performance, and false-positive risk of security detection logic
  • Analyze new cheat and attack techniques and research defensive technologies
  • Provide technical support and improvements to ensure KSS security features are reliably applied across various game environments

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years of C++ software development skills
  • 5+ years of experience with low-level Windows development expertise focused on working on security and/or anti-cheat (at game companies preferred)
  • Understanding of Windows internals, including processes, threads, virtual memory, synchronization, DLLs, and PE structures
  • Ability to understand x64 assembly code and analyze the behavior of disassembled code
  • Understanding of core operating system concepts such as kernels, drivers, system calls, interrupts, and memory management
  • Basic knowledge of computer architecture, CPU operation, memory structure, and executable file loading processes
  • Ability to analyze problems from a security perspective and design solutions while considering potential bypass methods

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience developing Anti-Cheat, DRM, EDR, security solutions, or client protection technologies
  • Experience developing Windows kernel drivers
  • Understanding of x86/x64 assembly, calling conventions, exception handling, and debugging techniques
  • Experience using analysis/debugging tools such as IDA, Ghidra, WinDbg, and x64dbg
  • Understanding of techniques such as code injection, API hooking, manual mapping, DKOM, rootkits, anti-debugging, and anti-tamper
  • Understanding of Windows platform security technologies such as TPM, Secure Boot, VBS, and HVCI
  • Experience operating security features reliably in large-scale live game environments
  • Experience in low-level system programming with consideration for performance, stability, and compatibility
