What does a gallery manager do?

As a gallery manager, your job is to manage an art space and ensure there is a show for people to see as frequently as possible. As part of this, you meet with artists, discuss the needs of an exhibition, decide which artwork should go on display, and plan each event at the facility. This is a management position, but your actual responsibilities may vary by location. Some gallery managers are placed in a customer-facing position, while others work behind the scenes to keep the area running. You may need to spend time working on a website, personally promoting the work of artists, and completing administrative duties.

How does a gallery manager typically collaborate with artists and curators to plan exhibitions?

Gallery Managers play a pivotal role in coordinating with both artists and curators to plan, schedule, and execute exhibitions. This often involves negotiating contracts, managing timelines, overseeing the logistics of artwork transportation and installation, and ensuring that all parties are aligned on the exhibition’s vision and objectives. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential, as Gallery Managers must balance the creative requirements of artists with the strategic goals of the gallery. This collaboration is key to delivering successful exhibitions that engage audiences and support the gallery’s reputation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a gallery manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gallery Manager, you need strong organizational skills, art knowledge, experience in sales or business management, and often a degree in art history or arts administration. Familiarity with inventory management systems, point-of-sale software, and event planning tools is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build relationships with artists and clients are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are essential for ensuring smooth gallery operations, maximizing sales, and creating engaging experiences for visitors and stakeholders.

  • Lead all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, financial reporting, audit management, tax filings, cash management, and compliance.
  • Provide financial analysis and decision support to senior leadership, the Board Treasurer, Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Audit & Risk Committee.
  • Oversee management of the Museum's endowment, investments, reserves, banking relationships, and debt obligations.
  • Support planning and execution of the Museum's comprehensive campaign through financial modeling, forecasting, and long-term scenario planning.
  • Provide financial stewardship and oversight for major capital and construction projects associated with the Museum's planned campus expansion.
  • Modernize financial systems, reporting capabilities, and business processes through increased automation and enhanced operational efficiency.
  • Partner with Advancement leadership on gift agreements, fundraising reporting, campaign planning, and donor-related financial matters.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and operational leaders on compensation planning, benefits budgeting, workforce planning, and related financial processes.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing Finance team while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Ideal Candidate
  • Ten or more years of progressive leadership experience in finance, accounting, financial management, and strategic planning.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector preferred; experience within arts and cultural organizations is highly desirable.
  • Deep knowledge of nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience overseeing endowments, investments, reserves, and financial planning for complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with boards, investment committees, executive leaders, and external advisors.
  • Experience supporting capital projects, comprehensive campaigns, construction initiatives, or large-scale institutional growth efforts is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and mentor high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strategic, collaborative, and mission-driven leader with strong business judgment, integrity, and executive presence.
About the Organization

The Norton Museum of Art is one of the nation's premier cultural institutions and the largest art museum in Florida. Following its transformative Norman Foster-designed expansion in 2019, the Museum has strengthened its national profile through expanded exhibitions, innovative educational programming, deeper community engagement, and growing philanthropic support. Now entering its next chapter, the Norton is advancing plans for a significant campus expansion that will enhance gallery capacity, elevate the visitor experience, and further showcase its world-class collection. Under the leadership of Director & CEO Ghislain d'Humières, the Museum combines artistic excellence, financial strength, and a bold vision for the future, creating a unique opportunity for the incoming Chief Financial Officer to help guide the financial strategy and long-term growth of a thriving institution at a defining moment in its evolution.
